Skyr or Greek yoghurt: what one pot actually gives you
Skyr and Greek yoghurt side by side: the protein, calories and sugar in a realistic 150 g pot, and which one actually suits your day.

You are standing at the chiller with a pot in each hand. Skyr on the left, Greek yoghurt on the right, near enough the same price, both shouting about protein, and the numbers on the back differ by a gram or two.
The short version: compare the fat-free options and skyr wins by roughly 1 g of protein per 100 g. That will not change your week. What does change the maths is how much fat is in the specific pot you pick up, and whether anyone has added sugar to it.
What the label says, per 100 g
These are rounded averages. They shift between producers and depend on how heavily the product has been strained, so the label on your pot always has the final word.
- Skyr: about 11 g protein, 60–65 kcal, 4 g carbs, under 0.5 g fat
- Greek yoghurt, 0% fat: about 10 g protein, 55–60 kcal, 4 g carbs
- Greek yoghurt, 2% fat: about 9 g protein, 70–80 kcal
- Full-fat Greek yoghurt (9–10%): about 6–7 g protein, 130–140 kcal
Neither has any fibre — zero grams, whatever the front of the pot implies. Salt is negligible at around 0.1 g per 100 g, so this is not the food that skews your daily sodium and potassium balance. Calcium sits around 120–150 mg per 100 g; straining takes some of the whey with it, so there is slightly less calcium than the thickness suggests.
A realistic portion
Almost nobody eats exactly 100 g. A standard pot is 150–170 g:
- 150 g skyr: about 17 g protein, 95 kcal
- 150 g 0% Greek yoghurt: about 15 g protein, 88 kcal
- 150 g full-fat Greek yoghurt: about 10 g protein, 200 kcal
The fairest comparison is protein per 100 kcal. Skyr and fat-free Greek yoghurt both land near 17 g per 100 kcal; the full-fat version drops to about 5 g. The same sum works on any dairy product, and you can run it yourself on any brand without trusting the marketing on the lid.
Fitting it into the day
If you are aiming for 1.6–2.2 g of protein per kilo of bodyweight, an 80 kg lifter needs 130–175 g a day. One pot covers roughly a tenth of that. Decent for something you eat in two minutes, but it is a top-up, not a meal.
It is more useful to think per meal: 25–40 g of protein, three or four times a day. A 150 g pot on its own does not reach that, so build it out — an egg alongside breakfast, a spoonful of seeds, a scoop of powder, or simply a 250 g serving.
Casein makes up around 80% of milk protein and digests slowly, which makes either product a sensible evening snack. Do not turn that into a rule, though: the evidence is strongest for total daily intake mattering far more than timing.
Who it suits, and who it doesn't
It suits you if you are holding calories down while keeping protein up — the usual position when you are cutting with actual numbers to hit. It also suits anyone who struggles to reach a protein target because they do not fancy much meat.
Straining removes some of the lactose, leaving roughly 3–4 g per 100 g, less than in milk. Plenty of people with mild sensitivity tolerate a pot better than a glass of milk, though that is a tendency rather than a guarantee.
It does not suit you if you have a cow's milk protein allergy — that is a different thing from lactose intolerance, and straining does nothing for it. If you are gaining mass and find calories hard to eat, a 90 kcal pot is working against you; full-fat versions or a handful of nuts make more sense. Plant-based pots usually carry 1–4 g protein per 100 g unless they are soya-based, and the same rule applies as when choosing between dairy milk and a plant drink: read the back, not the front.
Simple combinations
- Breakfast: 150 g skyr, 30 g oats, one banana — around 22 g protein, 315 kcal, 5 g fibre
- After training: 200 g 0% Greek yoghurt, 20 g almonds, a spoon of honey — around 24 g protein, 300 kcal
- Savoury: 150 g Greek yoghurt with garlic, cucumber and black pepper next to chicken — adds 15 g protein instead of a 200 kcal sauce
- Swap: using Greek yoghurt in place of soured cream in a sauce saves 100–150 kcal per serving
Common misunderstandings
Skyr contains a special kind of protein. It does not. Skyr is technically a fresh cheese made from skimmed milk, which puts it closer to the protein products you already read labels on than to anything exotic. For your daily total it behaves exactly like strained yoghurt.
Greek yoghurt and Greek-style yoghurt are the same. They are not. Greek-style is often thickened with milk powder or starch rather than strained, and can come in at 4–6 g protein per 100 g. Check the figure, not the name.
The fruit version is basically the same. Flavoured and fruit pots typically carry 10–14 g of sugar per 100 g. In a 150 g pot that is 15–20 g of sugar and 50–70 kcal more than the plain version.
More protein means faster results. Past roughly 2.2 g per kilo a day, extra protein generally does nothing for muscle. Below that, calories and training are doing the heavy lifting.
When to see a doctor
Get checked if every dairy meal is followed by persistent diarrhoea, bloating or pain; if you get a rash, swelling or breathing trouble after dairy, which looks like allergy rather than lactose; or if you have diagnosed kidney disease and are planning to push protein higher. Unexplained weight loss alongside gut symptoms is a GP appointment, not a yoghurt question.
In short
- Skyr has about 11 g protein per 100 g, fat-free Greek yoghurt about 10 g — the gap is trivial.
- Full-fat Greek yoghurt has roughly half the protein and double the calories; that is the real choice you are making.
- A realistic 150 g pot gives 15–17 g protein and 90–95 kcal, with no fibre.

- Pick the one you actually enjoy and will eat regularly. The rest is detail.
