Most protein per convertible mark: how to work it out
How to work out how much protein your money actually buys, how much sits in a typical pack, and which cheap combinations genuinely do the job.

The question that comes up most often in the gym is not how much protein you need. It is how to pay for it. When your weekly food budget is a two-figure number, the source of your protein matters more than any supplement on the shelf.
Prices move by town, shop and week, so there is not a single figure in marks below. What you get instead is the other half of the sum: how much protein is actually in the pack you are holding. Divide the price on the label by that number and you have a ranking that is true for your shop rather than someone else's.
A sum that takes thirty seconds
Divide the price of the pack by the total grams of protein it contains. That gives you the cost of one gram of protein. Compare three or four items and the gaps are usually wide — the dearest source in a basket is often three to five times the price per gram of the cheapest.
Two traps. Count the edible part only: a kilo of chicken thighs on the bone is not a kilo of meat, and a 160 g tin of tuna holds roughly 110 g once drained. And weigh pulses and grains dry, because cooking roughly triples the weight.
Protein in a typical pack
- 10 large eggs — around 60 g protein, about 700 kcal in total.
- 1 litre of milk — around 33 g protein; whole milk about 640 kcal, semi-skimmed about 470 kcal.
- 500 g dry lentils — around 120 g protein and about 55 g fibre.
- 1 kg dry beans — around 210 g protein and over 150 g fibre.
- 1 kg boneless, skinless chicken thighs — around 190 g protein.
- 1 kg chicken breast — around 220 g protein.
- A 160 g tin of tuna — around 25 g protein from the drained part.
- 500 g cottage-style fresh cheese — 55 to 65 g protein, depending on fat content.
- 1 kg rolled oats — around 120 g protein and about 100 g fibre.
- 1 kg whey powder — 700 to 800 g protein.
These are rounded averages. They shift with the cut, the fat content and the cooking, so treat them as a guide rather than a measurement.
What that looks like on the plate
The pack figure is for your budget; the portion figure is for your day. Three eggs give roughly 18 g protein and 210 kcal, with no fibre. A tin of tuna gives roughly 25 g protein for about 110 kcal — the densest protein-to-calorie ratio on the list.
A 150 g serving of cooked lentils gives around 13 g protein, 11 g fibre and 175 kcal. The same weight of roast chicken thigh gives around 28 g protein and 250 kcal. A 250 ml glass of milk carries about 8 g protein, and 60 g of oats about 7 g protein and 6 g fibre for roughly 230 kcal.
That shows the trade-off plainly. Cheap protein from pulses arrives with a lot of fibre and a lot of volume; cheap protein from eggs and milk arrives with fat.
Fitting it into the day
Most people who train do well on 1.6 to 2.2 g of protein per kilo of body weight a day. For an 80 kg person that is roughly 130 to 175 g, easiest to hit across three or four meals of 30 to 40 g each.
In practice: eggs or oats with milk in the morning, pulses or tinned fish in a lunchbox, a piece of chicken in the evening. If breakfast is the meal that keeps collapsing, there are three five-minute recipes that hit 30 g.

Who this suits, and who it doesn't
It works best if you cook at home at least four days a week and you do not mind eating the same things often. Students and families see the biggest difference.
It suits you less if you do not tolerate lactose, if large amounts of pulses leave you bloated, or if your appetite is small — then the sheer volume of beans and lentils costs you more than the price saves. With a small appetite, the cheap low-volume options are eggs, fresh cheese and powder.
Simple combinations
- Lentils with two eggs and onion — around 30 g protein, plenty of fibre.
- Tinned tuna with pasta and olive oil — around 35 g protein in ten minutes.
- Beans with a piece of meat and bread — hard to beat on price per gram.
- Fresh cheese with oats and fruit — around 30 g protein, no cooking at all.
- Chicken and grain salad made the night before, eaten cold at work.
Common misconceptions
That powder is always the expensive option. Per gram of protein it usually sits near the bottom of the price range, not the top. It is not magic, but it is not a luxury either.
That chicken breast is the best value. Thighs generally deliver more protein per mark, with a bit more fat and better flavour.
That plant protein does not count. It counts, it is simply less concentrated per meal. The evidence is strongest for total daily intake mattering more than the source, provided you eat a varied mix.
When to see a doctor
If you have kidney disease or gout, or a doctor has previously limited your protein intake, do not change it on your own. The same applies if a sudden jump in pulses brings persistent stomach pain or digestive changes lasting more than two weeks.
In short
Divide the price by the grams of protein in the pack and you have your answer for your own shop. Eggs, dry pulses, milk, chicken thighs, tinned fish and fresh cheese tend to finish near the top. The rest comes down to taste and how much time you have to cook.
