You watch the final of the World's Strongest Man, someone throws a round concrete ball onto a platform, and the weight looks like an afterthought. The figures are public and measurable, but almost nobody explains what they mean. Here is what actually gets lifted in the stones and the log, and how it lines up with the weights you handle.

Atlas stones: a series from 100 to 180 kg

A competition set of Atlas stones is usually five pieces. The lightest sits around 100 kg, the heaviest normally between 150 and 180 kg. Each one goes onto a platform roughly one metre to one and a half metres high, and the platforms often get lower as the stones get heavier, so the biggest stone goes onto the lowest barrier.

The best competitors clear the whole run in 16 to 20 seconds. That is under four seconds per stone: pick it off the floor, roll it onto the thighs, stand up, throw it over the lip, then run to the next one. By the last stone the heart rate is close to maximum and the hands are already slick with sweat and dust.

Single-stone records go far past the competition range. The ceiling has moved beyond 280 kg for one stone loaded onto a platform. At that weight there is no rhythm left — it is a single five or six second effort that takes weeks of preparation.

One detail the camera never explains: lifters coat their forearms in sticky resin. Without it the stone simply slides off, because there is no handle and no edge to hook. The same person lifts noticeably less on a bare stone.

The log overhead: why 200 kg here is not 200 kg on a bar

A competition log is a hollow cylinder roughly 25 to 33 centimetres thick with handles cut inside it, so the grip is neutral, palms facing each other. Because of that thickness the weight sits in front of your forearms rather than stacked straight over them the way a barbell does.

That is why a log is not cleaned straight off the floor. It gets rolled onto the thighs first, then thrown into the front rack with one aggressive hip snap. The rack position is worse than a barbell rack: the elbows cannot get fully underneath the load, so the shoulders and triceps carry more of it and the centre of mass keeps drifting forward.

The practical result is simple. Almost everyone presses less on a log than on a bar, and it is geometry rather than strength. Competitions typically use logs of 120 to 160 kg for repetitions, while single-rep records now sit around 230 kg. Fifteen years ago that same record was closer to 200 kg, which tells you how fast the top end moves in a sport that only recently turned properly professional.

The old stones: Húsafell, Dinnie and a job interview

Long before anyone poured concrete into a stone mould, there were rocks that served as the local measure of strength for centuries. Iceland's Húsafell stone weighs about 186 kg and is carried flat against the chest, no handles at all, one lap around an old goat pen — roughly 50 metres. The limit is not only the back but how long you can pin a slab of rock to your torso while your forearms fill up.

Scotland's Dinnie stones come as a pair: one about 188 kg, the other about 144 kg, over 330 kg together. They have forged iron rings, and the story goes that a man carried both across a bridge in the mid-19th century. Only a small number of people manage them each year, and grip is nearly always the first thing to fail.

On one Icelandic beach lie four stones weighing roughly 23, 54, 100 and 154 kg, with names that translate to things like useless and full strength. To earn a place in a fishing crew a young man had to lift the 100 kg stone onto a rock ledge at hip height. That was a hiring test rather than a sporting record, and probably the oldest strength standard that still makes perfect sense today.

How this maps onto gym numbers

A 150 kg stone is nothing like a 150 kg deadlift. With a deadlift the bar stays against your legs, the grip is secure and the path is short. A stone has to travel out in front of you, over the thighs and up — the back and hips work for longer and at a worse angle.

A rough field observation: people who cleanly load a 140 to 160 kg stone onto a high platform usually pull well over 250 kg in the deadlift. It is not a formula, but it shows the gap between what looks impressive on screen and what sits behind it.

If you want to know where you stand, you do not need to grind out a true single — a 1RM can be estimated well enough from ordinary working sets. Stones and logs are one corner of the wider question of how much weight can be moved at all and under which rules, and a few of those records have stood untouched for decades.

The technique behind the numbers

With a stone everything starts at the hips. You do not lift it with the arms; you drag it onto the thighs, pause there for a beat, then drive the hips through and the stone travels up. The arms only hold. The moment someone bends the elbows and tries to curl it, the trouble starts.

The upper back rounds during all of this, and that is normal for the event — the stone is a sphere, so the body has to wrap around it. The difference is that competitors have trained that position for years with a strong back and strong hips underneath it.

The log is powered by legs and hips too, so squat strength transfers directly, and the names we give the muscles doing that work are a good deal older than the sport itself.

Where people actually get hurt

The signature stone injury is a torn biceps tendon at the elbow, and it nearly always happens when someone tries to lift with bent arms. Alongside that come lower back strains, bruised forearms and ribs, and sore wrists from the log.

If you try any of this, start with a stone you can load cleanly five times in a row, not the heaviest one in the gym. Arms straight, hips do the work.

When to see a doctor

Go without delay if you heard or felt a pop in the elbow or shoulder, if a large bruise appeared along with weakness in the arm, if back pain travels down a leg with pins and needles, or if you get chest pain and breathlessness after effort. A torn biceps tendon is best dealt with in the first few weeks.
