How Many Calories Do Mountaineers Burn? The Numbers Behind 8,000 a Day

Mountaineering is one of the few activities where you physically cannot eat as much as you burn. Expedition measurements land between 5,000 and 8,000 calories a day, while intake rarely clears 2,500. Here are the actual numbers, where they come from, and what you can take from them for your own weekend in the hills.

Three things that stack up

Mechanical work. Lifting your body plus your pack up a slope is the single biggest cost, and the only one you can calculate fairly precisely.

Hypoxia. Above 4,000 meters, resting metabolic rate goes up by 10 to 30 percent and stays up for as long as you are high. Breathing rate doubles or triples, so ventilation alone eats 5 to 10 percent of daily energy instead of the usual 1 to 2 percent.

Cold. Shivering raises expenditure two to five times above rest, in practice 200 to 400 calories per hour. One bad night at minus 20 costs about the same as two hours of uphill walking.

The numbers per vertical meter and per hour

If you want one figure you can use today: going uphill costs roughly 1 calorie per kilogram of total mass for every 100 vertical meters. Total mass means you plus pack plus gear.

  • A 75 kg person with a 15 kg pack: about 90 calories per 100 vertical meters.
  • A 1,200 meter ascent: about 1,050 calories for the vertical alone.
  • Descending costs roughly 25 to 30 percent of that per vertical meter — the same 1,200 meters down is 250 to 320 calories.
  • At 400 vertical meters per hour that is 350 to 400 calories per hour; breaking trail through knee-deep snow pushes it to 600 to 900.
  • On top of all that sits basal expenditure, about 70 to 80 calories per hour for a 75 kg person, and it never stops.

An expedition: weeks in deficit

On high peaks, doubly labeled water measurements give an average of 5,000 to 7,000 calories per day across the whole expedition. A summit day lasting 12 to 18 hours reaches 8,000 to 10,000. A rest day at base camp, doing essentially nothing, still runs 3,000 to 3,500.

Intake at high camps rarely exceeds 1,500 to 2,500 calories. That is a daily gap of 3,000 to 5,000 calories, sustained for weeks. It is why people come back from a six to eight week trip 3 to 8 kilograms lighter, with a third to a half of that loss coming from muscle rather than fat.

A climber at 7,000 meters does not lose weight because they move too much, but because they cannot eat even half of what they spend.

Why they cannot simply eat more

Appetite above 5,000 meters drops by 30 to 50 percent, and that is not a willpower problem. Hypoxia shifts hunger hormones, nausea from altitude sickness is common, and digestion slows because blood is going to muscles and breathing. On top of that, fat absorption falls at altitude, so the densest energy source is exactly the one that works worst.

Fluid is the same story. Dry cold air plus doubled breathing means 1 to 2 liters lost through the lungs alone each day, with total needs of 4 to 5 liters. All of it has to come from melting snow, which costs fuel and time.

What this means for your own big day

Your day is not Everest, but the arithmetic is identical. A typical outing of 1,200 vertical meters up and down, with 10 kg on your back and 7 hours of movement, comes to 3,500 to 4,500 calories in total. Practically:

  1. Breakfast 2 to 3 hours before you start: 100 to 150 g of carbohydrate, for example 100 g of oats, a banana and a spoon of honey.
  2. On the move: 50 to 70 g of carbohydrate per hour, which in practice is something worth 150 to 250 calories every 45 minutes. Past 4 hours of effort, aim for the upper end.
  3. Fluid: 500 to 750 ml per hour, with 400 to 800 mg of sodium per liter if you sweat heavily or it is hot.
  4. Afterwards: 60 to 80 g of carbohydrate and 25 to 40 g of protein within the hour, especially if you are going out again tomorrow.
  5. Across a big day: 8 to 10 g of carbohydrate per kilogram of body mass and 1.6 to 2.0 g of protein per kilogram.

Weighing yourself morning and evening is the cheapest test there is: losing more than 2 percent of body mass over the day is dehydration, not progress.

When to see a doctor

Altitude and large deficits create problems you do not negotiate with:

  • A headache that does not clear with rest, fluid and descending 300 to 500 meters, especially with vomiting or drunken, unsteady walking — that points to brain swelling and needs immediate descent and medical care.
  • Breathlessness at rest, a cough with frothy sputum, or oxygen saturation markedly lower than everyone else in the group.
  • Unintentional loss of more than 5 percent of body mass in a month, or loss that continues after you get home.
  • Resting heart rate 10 beats above your normal for more than a week or two, with fatigue that does not lift.
  • Missed periods, repeated stress fractures, frequent infections — the classic cluster from a prolonged energy deficit.
  • Numbness or white toes that do not regain color after 30 minutes of rewarming, plus chest pain, fainting or an irregular pulse — always, and straight away.

The short version

  • Climbing costs about 1 calorie per kilogram of total mass per 100 vertical meters; descending costs 25 to 30 percent of that.
