How Long Can You Go Without Water? The Actual Numbers
How many days survival without water really takes, what happens hour by hour, how to measure your own sweat loss, and when dehydration needs a doctor.

Ask how long a person can go without water and you usually get „three days” and nothing else. That number describes an adult sitting in the shade — at 34 °C with two hours of physical work in the sun, the same person is in trouble inside 24 hours. Here is what actually happens, with numbers you can check on yourself.
The short answer
A healthy adult with zero fluid intake lasts 2 to 4 days in average conditions (20–25 °C, shade, resting). In a cool room, lying still, barely sweating, that stretches to 5 to 7 days. At 40 °C with physical work it collapses to 12 to 24 hours. For comparison, people survive 30+ days without food. The gap exists because the body stores energy as fat but stores no water at all.
Why water runs out so fast
An 80 kg adult carries roughly 48 litres of water (about 60% of body mass). Every day, without doing anything:
- 1.0–1.8 L leaves as urine — and the minimum needed to clear waste products is about 500 ml per day
- 400–600 ml evaporates through the skin, with no sweating involved
- 250–400 ml leaves through breathing
- 100–200 ml goes with stool
That is 1.8 to 3 litres a day from a person who never leaves the couch. Metabolism generates only 250–350 ml of water per day as a byproduct. The deficit is unavoidable.
Consequences track percentage of body mass lost. At 2% (1.6 L for an 80 kg person) endurance and concentration already drop. At 5% (4 L) you get headache, nausea, falling blood pressure. At 10% (8 L) — confusion, no urine output, kidney damage. At 15–20% death typically follows.
Hour by hour, with nothing to drink
0–12 hours
Thirst shows up at 1–2% loss. Urine darkens and volume drops. Performance on longer efforts falls 5–10%.
12–24 hours
Urine output under 500 ml per day, dry mouth, headache, resting heart rate 10–20 beats per minute higher than normal.
24–72 hours
Loss reaches 5–8%. Dizziness on standing, skin loses elasticity, core temperature climbs because the body shuts down sweating to conserve fluid.
After 72 hours
Kidneys start failing, waste products build up in the blood, and disorientation or altered consciousness sets in. This is not a wait-and-see zone.
What extends the clock and what shortens it
- Heat: every degree above 30 °C adds a few hundred millilitres to daily losses
- Effort: one hour of moderate training costs 0.8–1.5 L of sweat
- Body size: larger people lose more in absolute litres but start with a bigger reservoir
- Fever, vomiting, diarrhoea: each loose stool costs 200–300 ml
How much to actually drink
- Baseline: 30–35 ml per kilogram of body mass. For 80 kg that is 2.4–2.8 L per day, including water from food (roughly 20–30% of total intake).
- Training: 400–800 ml per hour of moderate work, up to 1.2 L per hour above 30 °C.
- Drink 150–250 ml every 15–20 minutes during the session instead of a litre at the end.
Measure your own loss: a 60-minute test
- Weigh yourself before training, undressed, to the nearest 0.1 kg.
- Train for 60 minutes and record what you drank (say 500 ml).
- Towel off and weigh again.
- Sweat loss = (weight before − weight after) + fluid drunk. Example: 82.0 kg → 81.0 kg with 500 ml drunk means 1.5 L of sweat per hour.
- Replace 125–150% of the loss over the next 2–4 hours: 1.5 L of sweat means 1.9–2.25 L of fluid.
Sodium is not a detail
Each litre of sweat carries 0.5–1.5 g of sodium. Lose 3 litres on a long session and that is 1.5–4.5 g of sodium gone. Replace all of it with plain water and you dilute blood sodium — hyponatraemia, which looks identical to dehydration (nausea, headache, confusion) but is treated the opposite way. For losses above 2 litres or sessions longer than 90 minutes, add 300–700 mg of sodium per litre of fluid. Half a teaspoon of table salt contains about 1.2 g of sodium — a reference point, not a prescription.
Three things that do not work
- Seawater. About 35 g of salt per litre. Your kidneys spend more water excreting that sodium than the drink provided, so you dehydrate faster than if you drank nothing.
- Alcohol. Every 10 g of ethanol (one standard drink) pulls out an extra 80–100 ml of urine.
- Avoiding coffee. Up to 400 mg of caffeine per day (3–4 cups) is a net fluid gain, not a loss.
When to see a doctor
- No urination for more than 8–12 hours, or urine the colour of strong tea
- Resting heart rate over 100 with dizziness or fainting on standing
- Vomiting or diarrhoea lasting more than 24 hours in adults, or 8–12 hours in children and older people
- Confusion, slurred speech, seizures
- Body temperature above 39.5 °C with dry skin and no sweating — this is an emergency call, not a tomorrow problem
- Lower your threshold if you take diuretics or have diabetes, kidney disease or heart disease
Thirst only shows up once you are already 1–2% down. It is a late alarm, not an early one.
The short version
- 2–4 days resting in shade, 5–7 days in ideal conditions, 12–24 hours in heat with physical work.
- Even doing nothing, the body loses 1.8–3 L per day and only makes 250–350 ml back.
- A 2% loss (1.6 L at 80 kg) already hurts performance; 10% is life-threatening.
- Weigh yourself before and after an hour of training, replace 125–150% of the loss, and add 300–700 mg sodium per litre if you lost more than 2 L.
