Incredible Strength Stories: The Numbers Behind the Legends

Extreme strength stories usually get retold without any numbers, which is why they sound like fairy tales. Add the kilos, the bodyweight and the years of training behind them and it gets much clearer what is actually doable and what is folklore. Here are a few cases with hard figures, plus what you can take from them into your own training.

Feats with clean paperwork

Naim Süleymanoğlu competed in the 60 kg class in Seoul in 1988. He snatched 152.5 kg and clean and jerked 190 kg, meaning he locked out more than three times his bodyweight overhead. His 342.5 kg total was 30 kg ahead of second place, which in weightlifting is an enormous gap.

Lamar Gant deadlifted 299 kg at roughly 60 kg bodyweight, five times his own mass. He had scoliosis, which left his arms long relative to his torso: the bar started higher, so the distance to lockout was a few centimetres shorter. Build was part of the story, but there were about fifteen years of training behind it.

Jan Todd became the first woman to lift the Dinnie Stones in 1979, 332.5 kg total across two unequal handles. Eddie Hall was the first to pull 500 kg in the deadlift in 2016, collapsed after lockout, bled from the nose and briefly passed out. Hafthor Björnsson did 501 kg in 2020, but on a longer bar with more whip, so the two lifts are not directly comparable.

Stories that do not survive checking

The famous one is Paul Anderson and the 1957 back lift: supposedly 1,290 kg raised off a platform with his back. It was never independently measured and was eventually dropped from official record books. Louis Cyr did something similar in 1895 with around 890 kg, with somewhat better documentation.

The point is not that people lied. The point is that range of motion is half the story. A back lift moves the load two or three centimetres and leverage does most of the work. You see the same thing in the gym: a rack pull from above the knee is usually 20 to 30 percent heavier than a full deadlift for the same person. Whenever someone quotes a number, ask how many centimetres the weight actually travelled.

Hysterical strength and lifted cars

Angela Cavallo lifted a Chevrolet Impala off her son in 1982 and held it for about five minutes while neighbours got a jack under it. Tim Boyle lifted the front of a Camaro off a cyclist in Tucson in 2006.

The arithmetic is less dramatic than the story. A 1,500 kg car does not carry its mass evenly, and when you grab a bumper or a fender you are lifting one corner through a lever. The effective load often works out to 100 to 250 kg over a lift of 10 to 20 centimetres. That is still a lot, but it sits in the range a strong person handles in a gym. The real difference is that adrenaline temporarily shuts down pain and effort perception, which is why people in those situations routinely end up with torn muscles or a back injury they only feel the next day.

What this is worth in your training

  • Relative strength is the honest measure. Realistic targets for most people after two to four years of serious training: deadlift 2 times bodyweight, squat 1.5 times, bench press 1.2 times.
  • The structure that builds it is boring. Three sessions a week, main lift 4 to 5 sets of 3 reps at 80 to 85 percent of max, then 3 sets of 8 on an accessory.
  • Add weight in small bites. For the first 8 to 12 weeks add 2.5 kg per week to squat and deadlift, after that 2.5 kg every second or third week.
  • Grip is often the bottleneck. Farmer's walks, 3 sets of 40 metres with 2 times 32 kg, plus bar hangs 3 times 45 seconds.
  • Recovery is not a detail. 1.6 to 2.2 grams of protein per kilogram of bodyweight, 7 to 9 hours of sleep, and 200 to 300 calories above maintenance if you are deliberately chasing numbers.
  • Stop testing maxes constantly. Take a true one-rep max every 10 to 12 weeks and estimate from a 3 to 5 rep set in between.

When to see a doctor

Straining under heavy load spikes blood pressure sharply, so some symptoms should not wait.

  • Chest pain or pressure while straining, especially if it spreads to the jaw or left arm: emergency.
  • Fainting, blurred vision or a severe headache that hits at the exact moment of the lift.
  • A bulge in the groin or around the navel that appears under strain and goes back in when you lie down. That looks like a hernia and needs an exam.
  • Tingling, weakness or loss of sensation in an arm or leg lasting more than 24 hours.
  • Cola-coloured urine with severe swelling and stiffness 24 to 72 hours after an extreme session: same-day medical care, that can be rhabdomyolysis.
  • If your resting blood pressure is consistently above 140/90 or you have a known heart condition, get checked before you start testing maxes.

The short version

  • Süleymanoğlu's 190 kg jerk at 60 kg and Gant's 299 kg deadlift at 60 kg are verified numbers; the old back lift records mostly are not.
  • Ask for range of motion with every claim: a short pull with good leverage easily doubles the number on the bar.
  • Lifting a car is real, but the effective load is usually 100 to 250 kg over 10 to 20 centimetres, with adrenaline masking the pain.
  • The one thing every story shares is time: 10 to 15 years of work, not one brilliant program.
  • Chest pain, fainting, a new bulge in the abdominal wall or dark urine after training means a doctor, not another set.
