Tyrosine: What It Actually Does, Dosing, and Whether It Is Worth It
What tyrosine really does in the body, the situations where it helps, how many grams and when to take it, and when it is a waste of money.

Tyrosine shows up in about half the pre-workout formulas on the shelf, and almost nobody can tell you why it is in there. It is not a stimulant and you will not feel it the way you feel caffeine, so if you are expecting a jolt, you will be disappointed. But in a few very specific situations it has a measurable effect, so let us separate what is actually shown from what the label implies.
What tyrosine does in the body
Tyrosine is a non-essential amino acid, meaning your body can build it from phenylalanine. Its job is to be raw material: dopamine, noradrenaline and adrenaline are all made from tyrosine, and it is also used for thyroid hormones.
Here is the detail that usually gets skipped: tyrosine does not raise dopamine when you already have plenty. It refills the stock when you are burning through it faster than you replace it. If you are rested and fed, your stores are full and an extra gram changes nothing.
Tyrosine is not fuel. It is a spare canister, and it only matters if you have already burned through half the tank.
When it helps and when it does not
The research is fairly consistent about the conditions under which an effect shows up. It helps when the nervous system is under acute stress:
- Sleep loss, typically after a night of 4 to 5 hours or after 20-plus hours awake
- Cold exposure, in studies below roughly 4 degrees Celsius
- Long cognitive load, working memory and rapid task switching
- Noise and sustained pressure, like a night shift or an exam block
It does not help under normal conditions. In a rested, fed person training in a heated gym, the difference against placebo is essentially zero.
What about training
Be realistic here. Tyrosine has no convincing evidence for improving 1RM, reps per set, or time to exhaustion. Studies giving 150 mg per kilogram of body weight before endurance work at 30 degrees Celsius found no performance difference. If your goal is a better strength session, caffeine at 3 to 6 mg per kilogram does far more.
A realistic case for tyrosine: a 5 a.m. session after 5 hours of sleep, training outdoors at minus 5, or a week of night shifts when your head feels foggy.
Dose and timing
Research doses are much larger than what most bottles suggest.
- Study dose: 100 to 150 mg per kilogram of body weight. For an 80 kg person that is 8 to 12 grams, which is a huge amount of powder and frequently causes nausea and loose stools.
- Practical dose: 1 to 2 grams. Below the study range, but tolerable and easy on the gut.
- Timing: 45 to 60 minutes before the task or session.
- Empty stomach: tyrosine competes with other amino acids to get into the brain, so take it at least 2 hours after a protein-heavy meal.
On forms: N-acetyl-L-tyrosine dissolves better, but a good share of it is excreted in urine before converting to tyrosine, so plain L-tyrosine remains the simpler choice. There is no point taking it daily, since the effect is tied to stressful conditions. Targeted use, 2 to 3 times a week, is plenty.
Food before supplements
An average diet with 120 to 150 grams of protein already delivers roughly 3 to 5 grams of tyrosine per day, well above what most capsules provide. Rough numbers:
- 150 g chicken breast: about 1.3 g tyrosine
- 30 g whey protein: about 0.9 g
- 200 g Greek yogurt: about 0.5 g
- 2 eggs: about 0.5 g
So a supplement is not fixing a tyrosine deficiency, because almost nobody has one. It is a timing tool, a way to get a concentrated dose on an empty stomach at a chosen moment.
Side effects and cautions
Most people tolerate up to 2 grams without trouble. Above 5 grams, nausea, heartburn and headache become common. Combined with a heavy caffeine dose, some people get jittery and notice a faster heart rate.
Be careful if you:
- Have hyperthyroidism or Graves disease, since tyrosine is a precursor to thyroid hormones
- Take levothyroxine, in which case separate the supplement by at least 4 hours from the medication
- Take MAO inhibitors, which is a serious interaction with a risk of blood pressure spikes
- Take levodopa for Parkinson disease, since the two compete for the same transport
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding, where safety data is essentially absent
When to see a doctor
A supplement is not the answer to symptoms that persist. Book an appointment if:
- Your resting heart rate is consistently above 100, you are losing weight without changing your diet, your hands shake, or you cannot tolerate heat, since that pattern points at the thyroid
- Fatigue lasts more than 3 weeks despite sleeping 7 to 9 hours, in which case ask for a full blood count, ferritin, TSH, B12 and vitamin D
- You take any medication for depression, thyroid conditions, or Parkinson disease, check before the first dose
- You get palpitations or a severe headache after taking it, stop immediately and get checked
The short version
- Tyrosine is raw material for dopamine and noradrenaline, not a stimulant, and it only works when stores are depleted.
- The effect shows up with sleep loss, cold, and long mental load, not in a rested person in a warm gym.
- There is no convincing benefit for strength or hypertrophy, where caffeine at 3 to 6 mg per kg does the real work.
- A practical dose is 1 to 2 g, 45 to 60 minutes before, on an empty stomach, targeted 2 to 3 times a week.
- Skip it with thyroid problems, MAO inhibitors or levodopa, and do not use it to paper over chronic fatigue.
