Wall push-ups feel like nothing, knee push-ups just about work, and the moment you get on the floor your hips drop halfway through the first rep. The question that follows is usually about kit rather than programming: what should I buy so that the next step becomes possible?

The honest answer is that the whole ladder — wall, incline, floor, feet elevated — needs remarkably little equipment. The trouble is that a lot of what gets sold as push-up gear solves a problem you do not have. This is a guide to telling the two apart.

What the equipment actually has to do

Push-up difficulty is governed by body angle, not by rep count. The higher your hands sit relative to your feet, the less of your bodyweight you carry. A wall is the easy end of that scale, a kitchen counter comes next, then a table, then a bench, then the floor, and then your feet up on the bench.

So the only real job of any equipment here is to give you a stable surface at several heights. Three requirements follow from that.

First, adjustability. A support with one fixed height buys you one rung of the ladder, and you need five or six for the transitions to feel gradual. Second, stability under movement. A push-up is not static loading — you lower and drive, so the surface takes an impulse, not just a steady press. Third, it has to disappear. Anything that permanently occupies the middle of a room rarely survives its second month in a flat, however good it is.

Everything beyond that — rotating mechanisms, padding, rep counters — is an extra, and should be priced in your head as one.

The specifications that matter, and what each one means

Load rating

In a plank position roughly 60–70% of your bodyweight sits on your hands. Put your feet on a bench and that share climbs past 75%. Because the lowering and the drive are dynamic, the brief peak load is noticeably higher than that settled figure.

Treat a stated load rating as a test-rig ceiling, not a working number. In practice, look for a figure at least double your bodyweight, and check whether it refers to one unit or to a pair of handles — that distinction often goes unmentioned. If no load figure is published at all, that tells you enough.

Height and adjustment steps

To move smoothly from wall to floor you want supports spanning roughly 90 cm down to zero. Steps of 10–20 cm are close enough that each new level is harder without being impossible.

An adjustable bench with three to five back positions, a step platform that stacks to two or three heights, or simply a counter plus a table will all do the same job. On a bench, check that the backrest locks mechanically — a pin or a toothed rack — rather than relying on friction.

Base width and stability

For handles, the ratio of base width to grip height matters more than anything else on the box. A tall handle on a narrow base tips sideways the moment your elbow drifts out of line, which is precisely what happens when you are tired. A base wider than the handle is tall is a rule that rarely lets you down.

Rubber or silicone feet are what separate a handle that stays put from one that skates across tiles and laminate. On a bench, look at the leg spread and whether the feet adjust, because no floor in a flat is truly level.

Materials and grip

Steel, hard plastic and wood all work if the build is honest. Steel tube forgives rough handling, wood is the kindest on the palm, and plastic is fine until a moulding seam appears at the highest-stress point — which is also where it fails.

A grip diameter of 30–40 mm suits most hands. Too thin and it digs in; too thick and your forearms give out before your chest has felt the set. Foam sleeves are comfortable for the first few weeks and tend to shed within the year, while knurled surfaces or bare sanded wood last far longer.

Rotating handles and other extras

Handles that swivel on their axis are marketed as a fix for shoulder pain. The evidence for that claim is thin and the question is not settled. What handles reliably give you is a neutral wrist position and a few extra centimetres of range at the bottom. If your wrists complain during floor push-ups, that is reason enough to buy a pair — it does not need a grander justification.

Resistance bands

A long loop band works in both directions. Run it across your shoulder blades and pinned under your hands, it adds resistance where the movement is easiest, near the top. Anchored above you and passed under your chest, it assists you out of the bottom. Space and money, realistically

Space is the smallest issue here. A push-up needs about 2 m of length and 1 m of width of clear floor, with no height requirement at all, since you never stand up. An inclined bench wants another half a metre at the side so you can walk round it. Flooring is the item people forget. Hard tiles bruise knees and let handles slide; a thick soft carpet swallows the support and your body wobbles. You want something moderately firm, and the material options are set out in the piece on home gym flooring.

On cost, the spread comes down to three things: material, stated load rating and the number of adjustment positions. Bands and handles are the cheap layer, and the gap between a poor one and a good one is small. A bench is the only significant expense, because you are paying for steel, welds and a locking mechanism. Common buying mistakes

  • Buying handles before floor push-ups work. Handles increase depth and therefore difficulty. If a full rep is still out of reach, you need something to lean on, not something that lets you sink lower.
  • A support with one height. One fixed level is one rung; a month later it sits unused.
  • Reading the load rating and ignoring the base. A handle can take 200 kg of downward force and still tip over sideways.
  • Multi-part systems. Kits that assemble into a dozen configurations get assembled into none, because reconfiguring takes longer than the set itself.
  • Ignoring the surface. Hands sliding apart is the single most common reason people abandon feet-elevated push-ups.

Who it pays off for, and who should skip it

It pays off if you train at home and are still building your first proper reps, because an adjustable support is the one thing that turns an impossible rep into a set of eight. It also pays off if you are rebuilding after a long layoff, when you need many small increments in a short space of time.

It pays off for anyone whose wrists object to flat-palm push-ups. Handles solve a specific mechanical problem there, and there is nothing noble about training through that discomfort.

Skip it if you already own a solid table, a sturdy chair and a staircase — that is a ready-made ladder of heights costing nothing. Skip it if you train in a gym that already has benches and boxes. And skip it until you have spent four to six weeks with what you own, because before that you cannot tell which rung is actually missing.

When to see a doctor

Equipment does not treat pain. If the front of your shoulder hurts on the way down and the ache outlasts the session, if it wakes you at night or bites when you raise your arm overhead, or if you get pins and needles or weakness in the hand, no choice of handle will fix it. The same goes for elbow pain lasting more than a fortnight despite cutting your volume. Get it looked at by a doctor or physiotherapist before pushing the progression further.

In short

What push-ups need is a range of heights, not a machine. One adjustable support with an honest load rating and a wide base, a pair of handles once floor reps are solid, and perhaps one or two bands — that is the entire list. Anything else is charging you to solve a problem push-ups do not have.
