Lat pulldown and cable row machines: what to check before buying
How to choose a lat pulldown and seated cable row machine: which specs actually matter, how much room and money it really takes, and what to avoid.

The question comes up every time someone builds a home gym and gets to the pulling exercises: do I need a separate lat pulldown, a separate seated row station, or does one combined machine cover both? A combined machine covers both perfectly well — provided you check a handful of things that product listings tend to leave out.
One distinction first, because these get mixed up constantly. Cable rowing is a strength exercise for the back, done in sets and reps. This piece is about the machine with a weight stack, pulleys and a cable.
What the machine genuinely has to have
There is a short list of things you cannot live without. Everything else comes down to budget and taste.
- Adjustable thigh pads. Pull more than your bodyweight and the machine lifts you off the seat. The pads need to sit firmly on your thighs just above the knee, which means at least three or four height positions. A single fixed position works for one person of one height.
- Enough cable travel. Too little, and a taller lifter runs out of cable at the end of a row and cannot reach full overhead extension on the pulldown.
- Guide rods for the stack. Plates running on two rods with nylon bushings move quieter and straighter than plates on a single post.
- A frame that stays put. If the machine rocks under load, you will hold back on the weight out of caution rather than because the set is hard.
- Spare parts you can actually order. The cable is a wear item. A seller who cannot source a replacement cable for your model is selling you a machine with an expiry date.
The specs that matter and what each one means
Stack weight and pulley ratio
The number on the label is not always the resistance you feel. On a fair number of machines the high pulley runs at a 2:1 ratio, so a 90 kg stack gives you roughly 45 kg at the bar. That is not a flaw in itself — the ratio buys you longer, smoother travel — but it changes how you size the stack completely.
If the manual lists a 90 kg stack and a 45 kg maximum load at the bar, that is 2:1. If both numbers match, it is 1:1 and the stack runs out twice as fast. A 90 kg lifter already doing weighted pull-ups will outgrow 45 kg of effective resistance quite quickly.
Plates usually weigh 4.5 to 5 kg each, so your smallest jump is 4.5 to 5 kg — or half that on a 2:1 machine. When you stall at a weight, that is a coarse increment. Add-on plates of 1.25 and 2.5 kg that sit on top of the stack solve it cheaply, and they are worth buying with the machine.
Frame, steel and the machine's own weight
Tube wall thickness and profile size separate a machine that sits still from one that sways. Budget home units tend to use roughly 50x50 mm profiles with a thinner wall; more serious ones move up to 60x60 mm and thicker walls.
If the manufacturer does not publish those figures, look at the shipping weight instead. Lighter home combo units run around 60 to 90 kg with the stack; sturdier ones are 120 to 180 kg and up. Mass is not a perfect proxy, but it is the one number nobody bothers to inflate. The stated maximum user weight tells you something similar about how the frame was calculated.
Pulleys, cable and bearings
The cable is nylon-coated steel wire, typically four and a half to six millimetres across, with a rated strength many times the stack. That figure is rarely the problem. The pulleys are: solid composite wheels on sealed ball bearings roll smoothly for years, while wheels on plain plastic bushings start to squeak and drag.
More pulleys mean more friction and a load that feels sticky rather than smooth. If you can try the machine in a shop, pull the empty bar with the lightest plate and let it return slowly. It should come back without juddering and without a scraping noise.
Seat, footplate and handles
For seated rowing, the cable wants to run roughly horizontal towards your lower ribs. That depends on seat height relative to the low pulley, so an adjustable seat is a genuine advantage when more than one person uses the machine.
The footplate needs to take your whole foot and sit at a slight angle, because you will be bracing against it under full load. Small metal pegs where you balance on your toes are a reliable source of cramp and sloppy positioning.
Handles swap over via a standard carabiner or ring. Check that the machine uses a standard attachment rather than a welded-on bar, because sooner or later you will want a wide bar, a close V-handle and a pair of single grips.
How much room it really takes
Ceiling height is the first thing you measure, before you look at a single listing. Most combined machines stand somewhere around two metres to two-fifteen, and you need a bit of air above that for the cable and for your arms when you sit and reach overhead. Below roughly 215 to 230 cm of ceiling, your options narrow sharply.
The machine itself takes about a metre and a half in length and a metre to a metre and a half across. Add space behind the seat for rowing and room to get in and out, and you are realistically giving up a rectangle of about 2.5 by 1.8 metres that cannot be used for anything else.
If those numbers do not work in your room, a functional trainer or cable crossover sometimes does the same job with a different footprint, and the cheapest route to pulling work remains a doorway pull-up bar plus resistance bands for assistance.
How much money it really takes
Prices vary far too much between markets for a price list to be useful, so treat these as rough bands. The cheapest combined machines, with a light frame and a modest stack, sit in the low hundreds. The middle of the market — a stiffer frame, an 80 to 100 kg stack, decent pulleys — typically runs two to three times that. Semi-commercial and commercial units go several times higher again.
What pushes the price up is steel, bearings, upholstery quality and the length of the frame warranty. What pulls it down is thin tube, plastic bushings and a stack you will outgrow. Two costs people forget: delivery of a very heavy item plus any assembly, and replacing the cable a few years down the line.
Common buying mistakes
- Judging by stack weight alone. Without the pulley ratio, that number tells you nothing about actual resistance.
- Not measuring the ceiling. The most expensive mistake, because nothing fixes it except sending the machine back.
- Buying by the number of exercises in the photo. Machines that promise twenty exercises usually do none of them well.
- Ignoring adjustability for other people in the house. If two people twenty centimetres apart in height share the machine, fixed pads and a fixed seat become a daily irritation.
- Expecting it to replace free weights. It covers pulling beautifully and does nothing for squatting, hinging or pressing.
Who it is worth it for, and who it is not
It is worth it if you train at home and care about your back, if you cannot do pull-ups yet and need adjustable load to progress towards them, or if you want a controlled range of motion with predictable resistance. It is not worth it if you already pay for a gym that has one, if space is tight, or if you train mostly with free weights and pulling is a side dish. In those cases a bar, some bands and a pair of dumbbells give you far more per pound spent.
When to see a doctor
A sharp catch in the shoulder during a pulldown, numbness or weakness travelling down the arm, or back pain that runs into the leg are not problems you solve by choosing a different machine. The same goes for pain that stays with you on rest days. If seated rowing regularly leaves your lower back sore, start with technique and the advice on preventing back pain; if it has not settled in two to three weeks, see a doctor or a physiotherapist.
In short
Measure the ceiling before anything else. Ask for the pulley ratio, not just the kilograms on the stack. Adjustable thigh pads, an adjustable seat and a proper footplate are worth more than another ten kilos of plates. The machine's own weight is the most honest indicator of frame quality. And check you can order a replacement cable before you buy — that is the one part that will definitely need replacing.
