The Strangest Fitness Trends in History and What They Taught Us
A tour of the oddest fitness fads from ancient Greece to today, with real numbers and a simple test for spotting gear that does absolutely nothing.

Over the last 150 years the fitness industry has sold an enormous amount of equipment that physiologically cannot do what it promises. The pattern almost never changes: results without effort, a machine that shakes, heats or zaps you, then silence a few years later. Here are the strangest examples and what you can actually take from them.
The vibrating belt: 15 minutes of shaking instead of training
From the 1930s to the late 1960s, gyms were full of machines with a canvas strap around your waist and a motor that jerked the strap for 10 to 15 minutes. The claim was that vibration breaks up fat deposits so they melt away on their own. That is not how it works: fat is oxidised in muscle and liver when there is an energy deficit, not shaken out of subcutaneous tissue.
The numbers are brutal. Fifteen minutes standing passively on one of those machines burns about as much as sitting still, roughly 15 to 25 kcal. The same 15 minutes of brisk walking at 5.5 to 6 km/h burns 80 to 100 kcal for an 80 kg person. That is a fourfold difference, and walking costs nothing.
Sweat suits and sauna belts
Rubberised suits you train in to "melt fat" have been around since at least the 1950s, and they still sell today as waist wraps. In 45 to 60 minutes of work in one you really do lose 1 to 2 kg, but it is water. After you drink 1.5 to 2 litres of fluid, all of it comes back within 12 to 24 hours.
The problem is that strength, focus and endurance start dropping at a loss of just 2 percent of body mass, which for an 80 kg person is only 1.6 kg. Combat sports use this deliberately and briefly, right before a weigh-in. As a fat loss method it is pointless, and in hot weather it is genuinely risky.
Electrical stimulation: abs while you watch TV
Electrode belts promising "abs without exercise" peaked in the early 2000s. In 2002 the US Federal Trade Commission went after several manufacturers over claims like "lose six kilograms in four weeks", resulting in multi-million dollar settlements and refunds to buyers.
Electrical stimulation is not a scam in itself; it is used in rehab for people who cannot actively contract a muscle. But controlled studies show that without a change in diet it does not measurably alter waist circumference or body fat percentage. What does: 3 sessions a week, 3 to 4 sets of 8 to 12 reps of compound lifts, plus a daily deficit of 300 to 500 kcal. For the trunk specifically, plank for 3 sets of 30 to 45 seconds and dead bugs for 3 sets of 8 reps per side.
Shoes that "work out for you"
Between 2009 and 2011, tens of millions of pairs of shoes with a rounded, deliberately unstable sole were sold on the claim that they strengthen your glutes and burn extra calories during ordinary walking. Two large regulatory settlements, in 2011 and 2012, were worth 25 and 40 million dollars respectively, with money returned to buyers. Independent measurements of muscle activation and oxygen consumption found no difference compared to normal trainers.
The trends that were actually good
Not all of them were quackery. Ancient Greeks used halteres, stone or metal weights of roughly 2 to 9 kg, both for the long jump and as standalone training. The story of Milo of Croton carrying the same calf every day until it grew into a bull is the first written description of progressive overload, the principle every serious program still runs on.
Indian clubs, popularised in the 19th century through the British army, usually weighed 0.5 to 2 kg and were swung in 2 to 3 sets of 30 to 60 seconds. They are coming back today as shoulder mobility work. Gustav Zander built the first lever-and-weight apparatus in the 1860s, the direct ancestor of every machine in a modern gym.
1980s aerobics: half right, half wrong
Video tapes from 1982 launched a fashion for training 6 days a week, 60 minutes at a time, with plenty of jumping, often on concrete under a thin carpet and in shoes with no cushioning. Reports from the late 1980s suggested that up to three quarters of instructors had at least one class-related injury, most often knees, shins and feet.
What survived is the dose itself: 150 minutes a week of moderate aerobic activity is still the standard recommendation. What died is the belief that it has to hurt and that three rest days a month is enough recovery.
How to spot the next useless trend
- It promises results with no change in diet and no increase in load.
- It works locally, on one body part. Spot reduction of fat does not exist.
- Its evidence is testimonials and before-and-after photos, not measurements.
- It asks for under 10 minutes a day for a change that normally takes months.
- It uses words like "toxins", "activation" and "toning" without a single number.
When to see a doctor
Most of this is harmless, but a few situations are not worth improvising with:
- Chest pain, breathlessness or fainting during effort. Go immediately, do not wait it out.
- Any electrical stimulation device if you have a pacemaker, an implanted defibrillator, epilepsy, or you are pregnant. Ask before the first use.
- Dizziness, cramping or nausea after working in a sweat suit. Those are dehydration signs.
- Joint or tendon pain that lasts longer than 2 weeks or shows up at rest.
- Unintentional loss of more than 5 percent of body mass in 6 months, regardless of what you were doing.
The short version
- Vibration, sweating and electrical pulses do not burn fat. A deficit and mechanical load do.
- 15 minutes of brisk walking burns 80 to 100 kcal; 15 minutes on a vibrating belt burns about 20.
