Deadlift records: how they fell and where the limit sits
How deadlift records climbed from 457 kg to 501 kg, why strongman and powerlifting numbers are not comparable, and what really caps the top end.

Half a tonne off the floor sounds like a wall, but it came down in 2016 and has moved once since. The catch is that deadlift records are not measured under one set of rules — the bar, the grip, the kit and the drug-testing policy can be worth thirty kilos or more between lists. So the first question is what actually counts, and only then who lifted what.
There is no single record
Several separate lists run in parallel, each with its own rulebook.
- Raw powerlifting: belt, chalk and shoes are allowed, lifting straps are not. Your hands are part of the test.
- Equipped powerlifting: a deadlift suit is added, and it helps most in the first few centimetres.
- Strongman: straps and a suit are legal, and the bar is usually thinner and more flexible.
- Tested versus untested federations: same lift, separate lists, different numbers at the top.
- Variants: an 18-inch bar, a hex bar, a thick axle — each carries its own record.
That is why arguments about who is strongest usually stall on rules rather than kilos, the same problem that runs through every strength sport and is unpicked in our piece on the heaviest weight ever lifted.
How the barrier came down
The first big psychological line was 1,000 lb. Andy Bolton crossed it in 2006 with roughly 457 kg, in a suit, at a powerlifting meet, after several lifters had spent years sitting just below it.
In 2011 Benedikt Magnússon pulled 460 kg without a suit. That lift stood as the raw benchmark for years and made a quiet point: the gap between equipped and raw pulling was smaller than most people had assumed.
In 2016 Eddie Hall lifted 500 kg at a contest in England, using straps, a suit and a deadlift bar. He collapsed shortly after the lockout, and the footage is probably the most watched deadlift ever filmed.
The record lasted four years. In May 2020 Hafþór Björnsson pulled 501 kg in his own gym in Iceland, with judges present and a live stream running. One kilo. The size of that step says more than any analysis.
Raw lifting climbed alongside it. By the 2020s the best raw pullers had reached the region of 480 kg, close to what had been the absolute equipped ceiling fifteen years earlier.
Why strongman numbers look bigger
Straps are the biggest single difference. Without them the grip fails before the back and hips do, which for many lifters is a band of ten to twenty kilos, sometimes more. With straps on, the lift stops testing the hands at all.
The bar is the second difference. A competition powerlifting bar is stiff and thicker; a deadlift bar is thinner and bends noticeably under load. The lifter pulls the slack out and gets the hips into a better position before the plates leave the floor, which shortens the hardest part of the pull.
Rules are the third. Some strongman setups tolerate hitching the bar up the thighs, whereas in powerlifting any downward movement is a failed lift. How far those differences run through the sport is covered in our look at what strongmen actually lift.
What really caps the top end
At these loads the legs are rarely the first thing to go. What fails first is the ability to hold the spine in position while the hips open, which is why maximal attempts tend to look like a back rounding rather than a bar slowing down.
Leverages matter more than most people admit. Long arms and a shorter torso cut the distance the bar travels, and a sumo stance cuts it further. Two people with identical muscle strength can be twenty kilos apart on proportions alone, and how differently bodies respond to the same programme is the subject of our piece on genetics and training response.
Bodyweight is part of the sum too. Every pull above 470 kg has been done by men over 150 kg and around 190 cm or taller. Relative to bodyweight the picture flips: the most striking pulls belong to light-category lifters who have moved close to five times their own mass, and several of those marks have stood for decades — more on them in the records that still stand.
Where the limit sits
Nobody knows, and anyone quoting an exact ceiling is guessing. Predictions of limits in the strength sports have a poor track record, and they usually land too low.
What the numbers do show is a slowdown. It took ten years to go from 457 kg to 500 kg, then four more for a single extra kilo. At that level every further kilo asks for more bodyweight, more years of training and more risk.
There is also the point that the ceiling depends partly on rules rather than on people. A new bar, a different plate loading or a looser lockout standard can shift the figure without anyone getting stronger, which is why bare numbers without context are close to useless.

When to see a doctor
Deadlifting is not dangerous in itself, but a few signs need an appointment rather than a week off. Pain running down the leg, numbness or weakness in the foot, and any loss of bladder or bowel control should be treated as urgent.
The same goes for chest pressure, fainting or a sudden severe headache during straining, and for a new bulge in the groin after a heavy set. Back pain that has not settled after two or three weeks of easier training is also worth having looked at.
