Doorway Pull-Up Bars: What to Check Before You Hang

A doorway bar is the cheapest way to train pull-ups at home, and also the one piece of gear that can drop you on your back if you pick the wrong type. The difference between a safe setup and a bad one is rarely the price of the bar — it is your door frame and three minutes of measuring. Here is what to actually check.

Three types and what each one demands

Tension bar (held by pressure)

You twist it until the rubber ends press against the sides of the frame. Nothing gets drilled, but it needs a straight, parallel, solid frame. Rated capacity is usually 80-110 kg, and that number describes quiet hanging, not a jump. When you jump into a rep or start swinging, peak force hits 2-3 times bodyweight: an 80 kg person generates a brief 160-240 kg spike. The rule here is simple — no jumping into the start position, no kipping, no sharp leg swings.

Leverage bar (hooks over the frame)

A bracket reaches over the top trim and your bodyweight pins it against the wall. Safer than a tension bar, but it needs trim at least 8-10 cm deep and a solid wall above the door. The bracket will mark paint and wood — put felt or thin rubber under the contact pads if that matters to you. The door cannot close while the bar is up.

Bolt-mounted bar

The safest option, and a permanent one. Use at least 4 bolts, ideally 6, M8 or M10 with 10x80 mm anchors into concrete or solid brick. Do not mount it straight into drywall — the board alone holds a few kilos; you have to hit the wood or steel stud behind it. For hollow block, use chemical anchors, not plastic plugs.

Measure before you buy

  • Opening width at the exact height the bar will sit, not at floor level. Frames are often 2-4 mm narrower up top. Most adjustable bars cover 62-100 cm.
  • Trim depth above the door: under 8 cm, a leverage bar has nothing to sit on.
  • Ceiling clearance: you want 25-30 cm above the bar so your chin clears it.
  • Space behind the door: 40-50 cm free so your knees and heels do not hit the frame when you tuck.
  • Your height: at 185 cm on a bar set at 200 cm you will train with bent knees — fine, but then you also need room in front.

Rated capacity versus usable capacity

Take the rated number and subtract 30%. That is your realistic working maximum, and it includes everything you carry. At 90 kg bodyweight with a 10 kg vest, your 100 kg needs a bar rated for at least 140 kg. If the manufacturer lists no capacity at all, that is your answer.

Check bar diameter too: 32-38 mm is comfortable for most hands. Above 40 mm your grip fails before your back does — great if grip is the goal, bad if you want clean sets of 8-10.

Test it before your first real rep

  1. Install and tighten per the instructions, then add another half turn.
  2. Put a mat or folded duvet underneath — the fall is short, but the back of your head does not forgive.
  3. Grab the bar with feet on the floor and load it gradually over 5 seconds.
  4. Hang full bodyweight, completely still, for 30 seconds.
  5. Sway gently side to side for 10 seconds.
  6. Take the bar down and inspect the frame: dents in the wood or cracked paint mean the material is giving and this type is wrong for your door.

Repeat that check every 5-10 sessions. For bolt mounts, re-torque after the first week, then every 4 weeks.

How to actually train on it

Two to three sessions per week with at least 48 hours between them — elbow and shoulder tendons adapt to this load more slowly than muscle does.

  • No pull-ups yet: dead hangs 3 sets of 20-30 seconds, scapular pulls 3 x 8, negatives 4 x 3 with a 5-second lower. That is 15-20 minutes total.
  • 1-5 pull-ups: 5 sets of 3, 2-3 minutes rest, always leaving one rep in reserve.
  • 10 or more: add 2.5-5 kg and go back to 4 x 5.

Grip shoulder width plus 5-10 cm, thumb wrapped around the bar rather than alongside it. For sweaty hands, 1-2 g of chalk or a dry towel is enough; gloves cost you feel and slip on thin tubing.

When to see a doctor

  • Shoulder or elbow pain lasting more than 2 weeks despite rest.
  • Tingling, numbness or weakness in the hand and fingers after hanging.
  • A sense of the shoulder slipping, or a loud click with pain.
  • Pain that wakes you at night or stops you raising your arm overhead.
  • If you fell off the bar and hit your head, blacked out, or cannot load the arm — same-day emergency care.

If you have had shoulder surgery, a cervical disc herniation or chronic shoulder instability, ask a physio or sports doctor before starting. Hanging is not forbidden, but the volume and schedule should be planned differently.

The short version

  • Measure opening width at mounting height, trim depth and ceiling clearance before buying.
  • Your working maximum is rated capacity minus 30%, and it includes bodyweight plus any added load.
  • Never jump into the start on a tension bar — peak force reaches 2-3 times bodyweight.
  • Before the first rep: mat down, 30 seconds of still hanging, then inspect the frame.
  • Train 2-3 times per week with 48 hours between, and re-check tightness every 4 weeks.
