Cable crossover and functional trainer: what your money buys
How to choose a cable machine for a home gym: pulley ratio, stack weight, steel and floor space, plus when the whole thing is not worth buying.

The question comes up with almost every home gym build: is a cable machine worth what it costs, and what actually changes if you spend three times as much? The answer isn't in the number of exercises printed on the box. It sits in five or six technical details that sellers rarely put in large type.
So let's go through them in order — what the machine has to have to be usable at all, what each spec means in practice, how much space and money you genuinely need, and who should skip the purchase entirely.
A crossover and a functional trainer are different machines
A cable crossover is a wide frame with two widely spaced uprights, usually with a fixed high and low pulley and often a pulldown station in the middle. It's built for big, sweeping movements: arcs with the arms, pulling from overhead, diagonals across the body.
A functional trainer is the compact version. Two uprights close together, with pulleys that slide the full height of the column. It takes far less room and gives you more angles. Most of what's sold for home use is the second type, even when the box says crossover.
What the machine actually has to have
- Two independent weight stacks, so each arm does its own work.
- Height-adjustable pulleys running from floor level to above your head, not two fixed positions.
- A frame that doesn't rock or lift at the front when you pull hard from the bottom.
- Steel-core cables with a stated working load, plus guards so the cable can't jump the groove.
- A basic attachment set: two single handles, a straight or cambered bar, and a rope. Everything else is an extra purchase.
The specs and what each one really means
Pulley ratio (1:1 or 2:1)
This is the number nobody advertises and the one that matters most. On a 2:1 machine you feel roughly half the weight you selected at the handle — pin 40 kg and you're pulling about 20 kg. In exchange, the cable travels twice as far, so wide movements don't run out of rope.
A 1:1 setup gives you the full selected weight but a shorter pull. Neither is better in itself. The trouble starts when you compare two machines by the number on the stack and end up 100% wrong. Ask for the ratio explicitly before you buy.
Stack weight
Home functional trainers usually carry somewhere between 45 and 100 kg per side. At a 2:1 ratio that works out to roughly 22–50 kg at the handle — plenty for anything you do single-armed, tight if you want the machine to cover heavy pulling and lower-body work too. If that's the plan, shop the top of the range or pick a model whose stack can be topped up later.
Height, cable travel and pulley positions
Pulley positions typically run from about 10 to over 20, and some models use a continuous slide with no fixed holes. In practice you need four heights: floor, hip, chest and overhead. Anything beyond that is convenience rather than necessity.
Frames usually stand 2.0–2.3 m tall, so a 2.4 m ceiling is the realistic floor if you also want seated pulldowns. Measure before you order, because there's no fixing this afterwards.
Steel, bearings and cables
Frame tubing generally runs from 50x50 mm to 75x75 mm, with a 2–3 mm wall. Thicker steel doesn't let you lift more; it stops the frame flexing under load and it's a large part of why the machine lasts a decade instead of two years.
Pulleys on sealed bearings run quieter and smoother than pulleys on plastic bushings, and the difference is audible within a few weeks. Cables are steel wire in a nylon sheath, with a breaking strength several times the working load — that's standard, not a selling point.
What about motor power?
There isn't one, which is good news. A cable machine is purely mechanical: no electronics to fail after the warranty, no running cost. Motor ratings belong to cardio kit, where on a treadmill the motor genuinely is the spec that separates cheap from dependable.
How much space you really need
The machine itself: a functional trainer is 1.1–1.5 m wide, 0.8–1.2 m deep and 2.0–2.3 m tall. A proper crossover with spread uprights wants 2.5–3.5 m of width.
That's not the space you need, though. Add at least 1 m in front for a bench and a step back, plus 1–1.5 m to each side if you work with the arms extended. Realistically: 6–9 m² for a functional trainer, over 10 m² for a crossover.
Weight matters too. Fully loaded, these machines clear 200 kg on a small footprint, so matting underneath protects the floor and cuts the noise your neighbours hear.
How much money you really need
Exact prices shift by country and by season, so treat this as ratios instead. The cheapest usable functional trainer costs roughly what a decent home cardio machine costs. The middle tier runs two to three times that. Commercial-grade builds sit four to six times higher.
What pushes the price up for good reason: heavier stacks, thicker steel, bearing-mounted pulleys, more pulley positions, extra stations on the same frame, a fuller attachment set, and a longer frame warranty. What pushes it up for no reason: the exercise count on the poster and a digital display.
Budget for the hidden parts as well. Kerbside delivery is not room delivery, assembly takes 3–6 hours and two people, and a bench, extra attachments and flooring add roughly 15–25% on top of the machine price.
Common buying mistakes
- Comparing models by the number on the stack without checking the pulley ratio.
- Measuring space for the machine instead of for the movement.
- Choosing by the catalogue's exercise count — you'll never do half of them.
- Forgetting ceiling height, and the doorway the frame has to pass through.
- Buying a stack that's too light, then having nowhere to progress after six months.
- No plan for a bench, which quietly removes a chunk of the chest and shoulder work.
- Buying it before the basics. If you don't yet own a bench or a pull-up bar, this isn't step one.
Who it's worth it for, and who should skip it
It's worth it if you train alone with nobody to spot you, since cables load you without the risk of a bar pinning you down. It's worth it if your programme leans on back, shoulders and arms, if your joints dislike free weights at end range, and if you genuinely get into that room three or more times a week.
For shoulder work — external rotations, pulls, light diagonals — a cable gives even tension through the whole movement and lets you step the load up in small increments. That's why it shows up so often in rotator cuff routines, and why it usually suits people building a sensible programme in their fifties better than heavy free weights do.
Skip it if your main goal is maximum strength in the squat, deadlift and bench press. A rack, a barbell and plates do that job better for less money. Skip it too if you have under 6 m², if this is the first piece of kit you've ever bought, or if you're counting on the machine to fix your motivation. It won't.
When to see a doctor
A cable machine isn't treatment. Pain that lasts more than a few weeks, pain that wakes you at night, numbness or pins and needles down an arm or leg, swelling, or an arm you can't raise above shoulder height — all of that gets assessed first, and trained around afterwards. Don't try to work a painful shoulder or knee loose off the back of a video you found online.
