Gloves or Chalk: What Actually Helps Your Grip

When the bar starts sliding out of your hands on the fifth rep of a deadlift, the limiting factor is usually friction between skin and steel, not back strength. Gloves and chalk solve that same problem in opposite ways: gloves put a layer of material between you and the bar, chalk dries the sweat so your skin grips better. Here is what each one actually does, and when it is worth using.

What gloves actually do

A glove spreads the pressure of the bar over a wider area of the palm and reduces skin shear. The material is usually 1 to 3 mm thick, and it helps most on exercises where a handle digs into a narrow line of the palm: cable rows, dumbbell pressing, loaded carries of 30 to 60 seconds.

The cost is grip thickness. A men's olympic bar is 28 to 29 mm in diameter, a women's bar 25 mm. Add 2 mm of material on each side and you are effectively holding a 32 to 33 mm bar. At 60 percent of your max you will never notice. On sets above 85 percent, especially if you have smaller hands, that is the difference between a hand that closes and a hand that opens.

Second, a glove does not remove calluses, it moves them. Under load the material bunches, and that fold rubs the same spot every rep. If you are still tearing skin while wearing gloves, the cause is almost always where the bar sits in your palm, not a lack of padding.

What chalk actually does

Gym chalk is magnesium carbonate, a powder that absorbs moisture. It does not glue your hand to the bar. It removes the thin film of sweat that kills friction. That is why it works so well on an aggressively knurled bar and does very little on the smooth, already dry handles of most machines.

The amounts are small: 1 to 2 g per hand, a thin coat on the fingers and the upper third of the palm where the bar actually sits. Loose chalk lasts one to two working sets, roughly 3 to 5 minutes of work. Liquid chalk (the same powder suspended in alcohol) dries in 20 to 30 seconds, holds for 10 to 15 minutes, and produces almost no dust, which is why it is often the only form commercial gyms allow. A 50 to 60 g block lasts months if you use it properly.

The downside is dry skin. If you train 4 times a week with chalk, wash your hands afterwards and use a moisturiser, or within 2 to 3 weeks you will have splits in the finger creases that hurt far more than any callus.

When to use which

  • Heavy pulling — deadlifts, barbell rows, pull-ups with 10 kg or more added: chalk. Gloves actively work against you here.
  • Long isometrics — farmer carries, dead hangs, 30 to 60 second holds: chalk, and maybe a thin glove if your skin keeps splitting.
  • Machines and cables for 12 to 20 reps: gloves are fine, grip is not the limiting factor anyway.
  • Kettlebells and high-rep conditioning: thin glove or bare hands. Heavy chalk on a kettlebell handle turns slick once it mixes with sweat.
  • Gym bans powder: liquid chalk, or a glove with a thin silicone palm.

Grip is a skill, not a purchase

If your grip fails on rep eight while your back could do twelve, the fix is not permanently switching to straps. Do this instead: every set up to 85 percent of your max without straps, everything above that with straps. Then add 5 to 8 minutes of grip work twice a week:

  1. Bar hangs: 3 sets of 30 to 45 seconds.
  2. Farmer carries: 2 to 3 sets of 30 to 40 metres at 50 to 75 percent of bodyweight total.
  3. Plate pinches: 3 sets of 20 to 30 seconds per hand.

On deadlifts, alternate which hand is supinated in a mixed grip between sets so you are not always loading the same biceps, or learn the hook grip. It is genuinely unpleasant for the first 2 to 3 weeks and the most secure option after that.

Calluses: prevention and first aid

Calluses tear because the bar sits in the middle of the palm and the skin rolls over it. Grip lower, just under the base of the fingers. Any callus taller than about 1 mm should be filed down or taken off with a pumice stone once a week after a shower. What rips is the tall, hard ridge, not thin skin.

If one does tear: wash with soap and water, trim only the dead flap with small scissors, cover it, and for 3 to 5 days avoid pulling or use straps that keep the bar off the wound. Do not pop an intact blister. While the skin is whole it is the best dressing you will get.

When to see a doctor

  • A palm wound that has not closed in 10 to 14 days, or has spreading redness and swelling, pus, or comes with a fever.
  • Tingling or numbness in the thumb, index and middle finger, especially at night, lasting more than 2 weeks.
  • Forearm or tendon pain that persists past 3 weeks despite backing off the load.
  • A finger that catches or locks in a bent position, or sudden grip weakness with no obvious cause.
  • A deep cut from the knurling, or any hand wound if you are diabetic. That one does not wait.

The short version

  • Chalk raises friction without changing grip diameter, so it is the first choice for any heavy pulling above 85 percent of your max.
  • Gloves reduce pressure and skin wear but add 3 to 5 mm to the bar circumference, which hurts on heavy sets.
  • The dose is small: 1 to 2 g of powder per hand, or liquid chalk that dries in 20 to 30 seconds and holds 10 to 15 minutes.
  • File calluses once a week and grip below the base of the fingers. That prevents more tears than any glove.
  • See a doctor for a wound that has not healed in 2 weeks, signs of infection, or night-time finger numbness.
