What the world breath-hold records actually are, what happens inside your body during apnea, and how to train it without ever risking a blackout.

Breath-Holding Records: From 11 Minutes to 24

Breath-holding is one of the few things where the gap between an average person and a world record holder is not thirty percent but a factor of ten. An untrained adult manages 30 to 60 seconds; the official static apnea record is just under 12 minutes. Here is what sits behind those numbers, and how much of it is useful to someone who trains for fun.

The record numbers

The core discipline is static apnea: you float face down, you do not move, and the clock runs until your first breath. No swimming, no depth, just time.

  • Men, no oxygen prep: 11 minutes 35 seconds (Stéphane Mifsud, 2009), then 11 minutes 54 seconds (Branko Petrović, 2014).
  • Women: 9 minutes 2 seconds (Natalia Molchanova, 2013).
  • With pure oxygen breathed in beforehand: 24 minutes 3 seconds (Aleix Segura, 2016), then 24 minutes 37 seconds (Budimir Šobat, 2021). That is a separate category — a few minutes of pure oxygen before the start roughly doubles the time, so the two lists are never compared.
  • Depth: Herbert Nitsch rode a weighted sled to 214 metres in 2007. Under their own fin power, with no assistance, the best divers pass 130 metres.

For comparison: a recreational athlete working at it seriously for a few months reaches 3 to 4 minutes on dry land. That is about the ceiling most people hit without special talent and without training in ways that get people killed.

Why you actually have to breathe

The signal to breathe does not come from lack of oxygen. It comes from carbon dioxide building up. Receptors in your brainstem and arteries track CO2, and when it climbs you get the panic and the diaphragm contractions. Those contractions usually start at 50 to 60 percent of your maximum time — so when they arrive, you are only halfway.

Blood oxygen saturation at rest is 97 to 99 percent. In record holders at the end of an attempt it drops below 60 percent, and readings near 50 percent have been recorded. Most people black out somewhere in that range, and the blackout arrives with no warning at all.

The dive reflex works for you

When cold water touches your face, your body throttles down automatically. Heart rate falls from around 70 to 40 or 50 beats per minute, and below 30 in trained freedivers. Blood vessels in the arms and legs clamp down and blood is redirected to the heart and brain. The spleen contracts and dumps 200 to 300 millilitres of red-cell-rich blood into circulation, adding two to three percent more haemoglobin.

The reflex is stronger in cold water, roughly 10 to 20 degrees Celsius, and stronger with the face submerged than sitting up. In practice: the same hold runs 20 to 30 seconds longer with your face in a bowl of cold water than dry in a chair. Among the Bajau people of Indonesia, who have dived on a single breath for generations, the spleen averages about 50 percent larger.

How it is actually trained

Two classic tables, both done dry, on the floor, nowhere near water:

  1. CO2 table — 8 rounds. The hold stays fixed, say 1:00, while the rest starts at 2:00 and shrinks by 15 seconds each round down to 0:45. This teaches tolerance for discomfort.
  2. O2 table — 8 rounds. The rest stays fixed at 2:00 while the hold grows: 1:00, 1:15, 1:30, up to about 2:15. This teaches your body to function on less oxygen.

Two to three sessions a week, never daily, 20 to 25 minutes each. Progress is slow and that is normal: going from 45 seconds to 2 minutes 30 realistically takes 6 to 8 weeks. Use a single full inhale, no packing extra air in — packing is why impatient beginners end up with a collapsed lung.

Where this turns dangerous

The big mistake is hyperventilating — ten fast deep breaths before the hold. Your blood is already 98 percent saturated, so you gain almost no oxygen, but CO2 drops far enough that the urge to breathe simply disappears.

Hyperventilation adds no oxygen. It only switches off the alarm while the fuel burns at the same rate.

That is why people pass out underwater with zero warning, often strong swimmers doing laps on one breath. The rules are simple: never hold your breath alone in water, keep a buddy within arm's reach and paying attention, one down one watching, and never in a bathtub. Stop immediately if you feel tingling fingers, tunnel vision, dizziness, or uncontrolled cramping in your hands.

When to see a doctor

Before you start with tables at all, check with a doctor if you have:

  • any cardiac diagnosis, arrhythmia, or an implanted pacemaker;
  • uncontrolled high blood pressure, above 140/90;
  • epilepsy, or any unexplained fainting in the past;
  • asthma, chronic lung disease, or a chest infection in the last month;
  • pregnancy, significant anaemia, or medication that affects heart rhythm.

Also see a doctor afterwards if headaches linger for more than a few hours after sessions, if you get chest pain, or if you cough up any blood.
