A short history of weights: Greek halteres, Chinese stone locks, Indian maces and the 1902 plate-loaded barbell, plus what still applies to your training.

What the First Weights Actually Looked Like

The first weights were not built so anyone would look better with a shirt off. They were tools for competition, military exams and circus acts, made from whatever was available: stone, lead, wood and later iron. Here is what they looked like, and which of those ideas survived intact into the barbell you load today.

Greek halteres: a handled weight of 1.5 to 4.5 kg

The oldest objects we can honestly call weights are the Greek halteres, dating roughly to the 6th and 5th centuries BCE. They are pieces of stone or lead, 12 to 30 cm long, with a groove carved out for the fingers. Most surviving examples weigh between 1.5 and 4.5 kg, and a handful exceed 9 kg.

Their main use was the long jump: the athlete swung them forward at takeoff and pulled them back in the air, which extended the distance. But ancient writers also describe stationary work with them swings, lunges, holding the arms out to the side. That is functionally the first dumbbell: a load held in one hand that you move your body with.

Chinese stone locks and the first standardised strength test

In China the equivalent was the shi suo, a granite block with a handle carved through it, shaped like a padlock. Training pieces typically ran 10 to 50 kg and were used for swings, one-arm presses and catches.

More interesting is that stone lifting was part of the official military examination for centuries. A candidate had to lift a stone of 100 to 150 kg and hold it in a prescribed position. That is probably the first documented strength test with weight classes and required technique the first time strength was measured rather than estimated.

Indian maces and clubs

On the Indian subcontinent weights took a different shape: a wooden or bamboo handle 100 to 120 cm long with a stone or metal ball on the end. A gada like that usually weighs 5 to 20 kg, while the shorter clubs used in pairs run 2 to 10 kg each. Wrestlers did sets of 50 to 100 swings behind the head, daily.

The point was never maximum load, it was the long lever. With the ball 80 cm from your hand, 6 kg on the end of a stick loads the shoulder like a far heavier weight held close to the body. It is still one of the cheapest ways to train the shoulder through a full range.

Milo of Croton and progressive overload

The most repeated story in training history says Milo of Croton carried the same calf every day until the calf became a bull. As a literal account it does not survive scrutiny: a calf goes from roughly 40 kg to over 400 kg in four years, and no human gains strength that fast. As a principle it is exactly right, and we now call it progressive overload: small, regular jumps beat large, rare ones.

From church bells to dumbbells

The English word dumbbell dates to the 18th century and literally means a silent bell. Bell ringers practised on a rig of ropes and counterweights with the bell removed, so the tower stayed quiet. The name transferred to the hand weight and stuck.

The 19th century brought globe barbells: bars with hollow spheres at each end, filled with lead shot or sand. The same bar could weigh anywhere from 45 to over 100 kg, which suited strongmen at fairs precisely because the audience could not tell what was inside.

1902 and the standard you still use

The turning point is 1902, when plate-loaded barbells went into commercial production in the United States. Only then did load become measurable and repeatable: you know exactly what you lifted and exactly what you added. In 1928 came rotating sleeves, which made the snatch and clean and jerk technically viable.

Today's standard: a men's Olympic bar weighs 20 kg, is 2.2 m long and has a 28 mm grip; the women's bar weighs 15 kg, is 2.01 m long with a 25 mm grip. Sleeves are 50 mm, and plates come in 25, 20, 15, 10, 5, 2.5 and 1.25 kg. The smallest symmetrical jump is therefore 2 x 1.25 kg, or 2.5 kg.

What still applies to your training

  • Small increments. Add 2.5 kg per week to squats and deadlifts, 1.25 kg to presses, and only for as long as technique holds. That is Milo's principle in a realistic version.
  • Swings as a warm-up. 2 sets of 20 swings with a single weight, about 5 minutes before the main work.
  • Long lever for shoulders. Hold a 4 to 6 kg dumbbell by one end, 2 sets of 10 controlled circles behind the head, instead of heavy lateral raises.
  • Asymmetric loading. Farmer's carries with the weight in one hand, 3 sets of 30 metres per side, load the trunk like almost nothing else.
  • Baseline ranges. For strength, 3 to 5 sets of 3 to 6 reps; for size, 3 to 4 sets of 8 to 12; rest 2 to 3 minutes.

When to see a doctor

Old tools are not dangerous, but load is if you ignore the signals. See a doctor if:

  • you feel chest pressure or pain, breathlessness or dizziness during a set stop immediately;
  • joint or back pain lasts more than 2 weeks despite reducing the load;
  • you get tingling, numbness or weakness travelling down an arm or leg;
  • you notice a bulge in the groin or around the navel that worsens when you strain;
  • your blood pressure is uncontrolled (above 140/90), or you are over 40 and have been inactive for more than a year and plan to start heavy lifting.
