What Strongman Competitions Actually Are
A practical breakdown of strongman competitions: the events, real weights, scoring, weight classes, a sample training week and the injury risks.

Strongman is a competitive sport built around lifting, carrying, dragging and throwing objects that are not a loaded barbell: stones, kegs, logs, vehicles. Unlike powerlifting, where the same three lifts are contested everywhere, the events change from one meet to the next. If you already train and you have wondered what those people are actually doing, here is how it works from the inside.
How the sport is organised
The first World's Strongest Man was held in 1977 and it is still the best known event in the sport. The Arnold Strongman Classic has run since 2002 and is known for the heaviest single-lift weights on the planet. Below that level there is a network of national federations and local shows, typically drawing 15 to 60 competitors per event.
One thing that surprises newcomers: the equipment is not standardised. A log at one meet is 30 cm in diameter, at the next it is 33 cm, and that alone changes how much you can press overhead.
The events you will see
Overhead
Usually a log or a thick axle. The format is either maximum reps with a fixed weight in 60 seconds, or a rising bar to a single. Amateurs work with 70 to 100 kg, open competitors with 110 to 140 kg, and the top end goes past 160 kg.
Carries
The yoke is a frame carried across the back, typically 250 to 450 kg over 15 to 20 metres. The farmer's walk is two handles, 100 to 150 kg per hand, also over 20 metres. This is where most people lose points, because the problem is not picking the weight up, it is holding it while moving.
Atlas stones
A series of five concrete spheres, usually 100 to 160 kg, loaded in order onto platforms 1.2 to 1.5 metres high. The time limit is normally 60 to 75 seconds for all five.
Drags and deadlifts
A truck or tractor weighing 8 to 15 tonnes is pulled 20 to 30 metres using a rope or harness. Deadlifts are rarely done from a standard 20 cm bar height; more often it is a tyre deadlift or a frame, with 250 kg at amateur level and over 400 kg at the top, again scored as maximum reps in one minute.
Scoring and how the day runs
A show usually has 5 or 6 events. Points are awarded by placing: with 20 entrants, the event winner gets 20 points, second gets 19, and so on. The total decides the overall, which means it is entirely possible to win a competition without winning a single event.
Realistically the day runs 5 to 7 hours, with 30 to 60 minute gaps between events. That means you have to eat and drink during it. Most competitors take 40 to 60 grams of carbohydrate and around 500 ml of fluid in each break, and that is not optional if you want your last event to resemble your first.
Who can actually enter
There are novice, open and pro divisions. On top of that come weight classes, most commonly under 80, under 90, under 105 and over 105 kg for men, and under 64, under 73 and over 73 kg for women. Masters divisions start at 40.
A realistic minimum for a novice show is roughly a 180 to 200 kg deadlift, a 140 kg squat, a 100 kg bench press and the ability to put 60 kg overhead. Below that you will finish the day, but you will not enjoy it.
What the training looks like
The common split is 4 sessions a week: two conventional strength days and one or two days on actual implements.
- Monday: deadlift 5 sets of 3 at 80 to 85 percent of max, plus rows and hamstring work.
- Wednesday: strict overhead press 6 sets of 2, then log or axle 4 sets of 5.
- Friday: squat 4 sets of 5, single-leg work, trunk work.
- Saturday: event day. Three implements, 4 to 5 runs of 20 metres each, with 3 to 5 minutes between runs.
Nutrition follows the load: 1.6 to 2.2 grams of protein per kilogram of bodyweight, 4 to 6 grams of carbohydrate per kilogram, and 3 to 5 litres of fluid a day for larger athletes. Grip gets trained separately, usually twice a week for 10 minutes, because grip is what ends half the events.
The real risks
The most common injuries are biceps tendon rupture (almost exclusively from mixed-grip deadlifts and stone loading), lower back problems from the yoke, and ankle sprains from carrying on uneven ground. Long high-intensity sets, especially on a return after a layoff, also produce rhabdomyolysis.
The less obvious issue is blood pressure. During a maximal effort with a Valsalva manoeuvre, pressure can briefly exceed 300/150 mmHg. A healthy heart handles that; undiagnosed hypertension or a structural heart problem does not.
When to see a doctor
- Before your first competition if you are over 35, if you smoke, or if your resting blood pressure is consistently above 140/90 — get a cardiology check and an ECG.
- Immediately for chest pain, fainting, or breathlessness that does not settle within 10 minutes of rest.
- Within 24 to 48 hours if your urine is dark brown and your muscles are painfully swollen — that is a rhabdomyolysis concern and needs CK and kidney bloodwork.
- Same day if you feel a pop in the upper arm with bruising and a change in muscle shape; a biceps rupture is best repaired within 2 to 3 weeks.
- Book an appointment for any bulge in the groin that appears under strain — that is likely a hernia and it will not resolve on its own.
The short version

- A meet runs 5 to 6 events over 5 to 7 hours, and points are awarded by placing in each event, not by total weight lifted.
- A novice division needs roughly a 200 kg deadlift and 60 kg overhead; weight classes and masters divisions exist too.
- Training is usually 4 days a week with one dedicated implement day, plus separate grip work twice weekly.
- Get your blood pressure and heart checked before your first show, and never ignore dark urine, chest pain or a pop in the biceps.
