Teeth and sports drinks: what the acid does to enamel and how to drink smarter
How sports drinks and gels erode enamel, when you actually need carbs in your bottle, and a concrete drinking and brushing protocol around training.

Sports drinks do two things to your mouth at once: they feed bacteria sugar and they drop the pH to a level where enamel starts dissolving. The problem is not one bottle after a match — it is the habit of sipping for ninety minutes, three to five times a week, for years. Here is what actually happens and what you can change without giving up hydration or fuel.
The acid matters more than the sugar
Enamel starts demineralising below pH 5.5. Most sports drinks sit between pH 2.9 and 3.8, which puts them in the same range as orange juice or cola. That means sugar-free versions and electrolyte tablets attack enamel too, because citric or phosphoric acid is what gives them flavour and shelf life. People who cut the sugar usually think they solved the dental problem. They solved half of it.
Sugar is the second, slower mechanism. A standard 500 ml bottle carries 30 to 36 grams of sugar (6–8 g per 100 ml), the equivalent of 7 to 9 sugar cubes. Plaque bacteria turn that into acid and hold it against the tooth surface for another ten minutes after each mouthful. The combination is worse than the sum: acid softens the surface, sugar extends the attack.
How long the acid window lasts
After a single mouthful, oral pH drops within one to two minutes, and saliva needs roughly 20 to 40 minutes to bring it back above 5.5. If you sip every 10 to 15 minutes through a 90-minute session, your mouth is below that line essentially the whole time, plus another half hour after the last sip. Instead of 20 minutes of exposure you get two hours.
Training makes it worse. When you breathe through your mouth and lose a litre or two of sweat, salivary flow drops — and saliva is the only defence you have. It rinses, buffers the acid, and puts calcium and phosphate back into enamel. The same drink is more damaging in minute 35 of an interval session than it is with lunch at your desk.
When you actually need a sports drink
- Up to 60–75 minutes of moderate work, including almost any strength session of 4–5 exercises for 3–4 sets: plain water is enough.
- 90 minutes and up of endurance work, or hard work in heat: 30–60 grams of carbohydrate per hour.
- Beyond 2.5 hours (long rides, trail, tournament days): up to 90 grams per hour, and from mixed sugar sources.
- Electrolytes are worth it if you lose more than a litre of sweat per hour or leave salt marks on your shirt — roughly 400–800 mg of sodium per litre.
In other words, most people in a gym are drinking a carbohydrate solution for a session that water covers completely, and paying for it in enamel with zero performance return.
A protocol that protects your teeth
- Take 2–3 larger mouthfuls every 15–20 minutes instead of constant sipping. Same fluid, same carbs, half the acid exposure.
- Use a straw where practical and aim the liquid behind your front teeth. Incisors and canines erode first.
- After your last mouthful, rinse with 100–200 ml of plain water and push it between the teeth for about ten seconds.
- Do not brush for 30–60 minutes afterwards. Softened enamel plus a brush means you are scrubbing it off. Brush before training, or an hour after.
- If you want to do something immediately, sugar-free gum for 10–20 minutes sharply increases saliva flow and restores pH faster.
- Fluoride toothpaste (1450 ppm), twice a day, 2 minutes each time. Spit after brushing, do not rinse with water — leave the fluoride working.
- Eat gels and chews in one go with a swallow of water, not stretched over 20 minutes.
The usual mistakes
- Homemade drink with lemon. 500 ml water, 25 g sugar or honey and half a teaspoon of salt is fine — but the juice of half a lemon takes it to about pH 2.5, more aggressive than anything on the shelf. If you need flavour, lean on salt and keep the acid minimal.
- The bottle that lives on your desk. The same drink spread over six working hours is far worse than 500 ml drunk during one session.
- Acid before bed. Saliva flow is lowest overnight, which makes the 11pm mouthful the most expensive one of the day.
- Creatine or amino acids in a flavoured acidic mix. The supplement is not the issue; the carrier is.
When to see a professional
Do not wait for the annual check-up if you notice any of these:
- Cold sensitivity lasting more than 10–15 seconds after the trigger is removed, or pain on biting.
- Incisal edges turning translucent and glassy, or teeth looking yellower — that is dentine showing through thinned enamel.
- Fillings that suddenly seem to stand proud of the tooth. They did not grow; the enamel around them retreated.
- Spontaneous night pain or swelling — that is urgent, within a day or two.
- Heartburn or reflux twice a week or more, or vomiting during hard sessions — see both a dentist and your doctor, because stomach acid sits near pH 1.5 and does damage far faster than any drink.
A check-up every 6 to 12 months covers most people. If you drink sports drinks three or more times a week, say so — the protection plan is different from the standard one and may include stronger fluoride products.
