Sports bras: how to choose the right size and support level
How to measure yourself, spot a band and cup that actually fit, and match support to running, lifting or walking — with real numbers and checks.

If your chest bounces with every stride and the straps have carved grooves into your shoulders by the end of a run, the answer is usually a different size rather than a pricier bra. Fitting data collected in shops and at mass-participation races points the same way: a large share of women are wearing the wrong band, the wrong cup, or both. Here is how to measure at home and how to match support to what you actually do.
Why breasts move as much as they do
There is no muscle inside breast tissue. It is held by skin and thin strands of connective tissue, and neither responds to training the way a muscle does. External support is the only real lever you have.
Running does not just move the breasts up and down. The path is three-dimensional — vertical, side to side, and in and out — closer to a figure of eight. Unsupported, vertical movement at running pace comfortably passes 8 cm, and a well-fitted high-support bra tends to cut total movement roughly in half. The larger the cup, the more obvious that difference feels.
The bit most people get wrong: the band around the ribcage does most of the work, not the straps. Once the band rides up your back, the load shifts onto your shoulders, and that is where the neck ache and the red marks come from. Measuring: two numbers and the gap between them
You need a tape measure and a mirror. Measure in a thin unpadded bra or none at all.
- Underbust. Run the tape level around the ribcage directly under the breasts, snug but not strangling. Breathe out, then read it.
- Bust. Stand upright, tape across the fullest point, no squashing. If the breasts are larger and softer, leaning forward to ninety degrees gives a more honest number.
Round the underbust to the nearest standard band: 73–77 cm gives a 75, 78–82 cm gives an 80, and so on in steps of five. Then subtract the smaller number from the larger. That gap is your cup, at roughly 2 cm per letter: about 12 cm is an A, 14 cm a B, 16 cm a C, 18 cm a D, 20 cm an E, 22 cm an F. In UK sizing the same logic runs in inches — around one inch of difference per letter, remembering the UK ladder slots DD in after D.
Treat the numbers as a starting point, not a verdict, because cut varies from model to model. That is what sister sizes are for: 70E, 75D and 80C hold a similar cup volume on different bands. If the band slides about, drop one band size and go up one cup letter.
Matching support level to the session
Manufacturers usually sort bras into three levels. The split is useful if you tie it to the impact your body takes rather than the name of the sport.
- Low support: yoga, pilates, walking, stretching, mobility work. No flight phase, no landings.
- Medium support: lifting, cycling, hiking, cross-trainer, brisk walking. Deadlifts and squats need a bra that stays put when you hinge forward, not maximum compression.
- High support: running, skipping, HIIT, team sports, boxing, riding — anything where both feet leave the floor.
If you wear a D cup or above, move everything on that list up one level. For lifting, that means buying something labelled for running.
Compression, encapsulation, or both
Compression bras press the breasts against the chest wall. They pull on over the head, cost less, and are perfectly adequate up to a B or C cup. The drawback is that on larger breasts they create one flat shelf and do little about sideways movement.
Encapsulation means each breast sits in its own shaped cup, wired or not. It holds a heavier breast better and digs in less, because the load spreads over more surface.
Combination bras give you cups plus an outer compressive layer. From a C cup upwards, that is the safest choice for running. A wire itself is not the problem, as long as it sits flat on the ribs and never on breast tissue; if it jabs you, the size is wrong, not the wire.
On runs over an hour, seams matter too — flat, bonded, or at least nowhere near the nipples. Salt from sweat sharpens the friction, so a thin layer of petroleum jelly or anti-chafe balm earns its place on long days out.
Five checks before you pay
Try it on and move. A bra that looks right while you stand still tells you nothing.
- The band is level. Same height front and back. If it climbs towards your shoulder blades, it is too loose.
- Two fingers, no more. Two fingers should slide under the band at the back with some resistance. Buy new bras that fit on the loosest hook, so you have room as the elastic gives.
- The straps carry nothing. Slip them off your shoulders for a second — nothing should drop. If it does, the band is not doing its job.
- The cup is full, not overfull. No empty wrinkling of fabric, no tissue spilling over the top edge or out near the armpit.
- The jog test. Jump and run on the spot for 20–30 seconds and feel whether the bra moves with you or a beat behind you.
Washing, lifespan and when to bin it
The elastane fails first, and heat and fabric softener are what kill it. Wash at 30 degrees in a mesh bag or by hand, skip the softener, and dry flat in the air. A tumble dryer or a radiator halves the useful life.
At three or four sessions a week, a high-support bra lasts somewhere between six and twelve months. The signs it is done: you have been on the tightest hook for weeks, the band creeps up, the fabric feels slack, or it suddenly rubs somewhere it never used to.
Keep at least two in rotation so the elastic recovers between sessions. Coming back after a long break, try the old ones on before your first session, because your body has probably changed in the meantime — there is a six-week plan for restarting that covers the rest of it.
When to see a doctor
Breast tenderness that turns up before a period and clears with it is common and usually nothing to act on. Pregnancy and breastfeeding change your size several times over, so remeasure as you go; what is safe to train is covered trimester by trimester.
See a doctor if you find a new lump, if pain persists with no link to your cycle, if it is one-sided and constant, or if you notice nipple discharge, skin dimpling, or redness and heat (which can mean mastitis while breastfeeding). None of that is solved by a better bra.
The short version
- The band carries most of the support: it must sit level and snug, with room for exactly two fingers.
- Measure underbust and bust; the gap sets the cup at roughly 2 cm per letter, and the number is only a starting point.
- Running, jumping and HIIT need high support, and anything D cup or above moves up one level across the board.
- Compression is enough to a B or C; cups plus compression hold larger breasts best.
- Wash at 30 without softener, air dry, and replace every six to twelve months of regular training.
