Setting up a small gym: kit, space and what to buy first
What the kit actually has to do, which numbers on the spec sheet matter, how much space and money it takes, and the order to buy in.

You have an empty room, a garage or a corner of a basement, and a budget that has a ceiling. The real question is not which piece of kit is best, but which one comes first and which can wait six months.
Buying order is what separates a room people train in from a room where one nearly-complete machine sits waiting for the missing part. So start with function, then move to the numbers.
Before you spend anything, write down what you will actually be doing for the next three months, how many days a week and for how long. The kit follows that plan, never the other way round.
What the kit actually has to do
Carry more than you plan to lift. If you squat 80 kg today, a rack rated at 100 kg is already borderline, because that is roughly where you will be in a year. Budget 20 to 30 per cent above your bodyweight plus load.
Allow small jumps. Progress moves in steps of 1 to 2.5 kg, especially on pressing and upper-body pulling. A set that only goes up in 5 kg increments looks tidy and quietly costs you months on the smaller lifts.
Be safe when a rep fails. At home there is usually nobody to spot you. Safety arms on a rack are not an accessory; they are the condition for training anywhere near your limit.
Fit the room in use, not on paper. A rack with a 1.2 by 1.2 m footprint needs around 4 m² in practice, because the bar is about 220 cm long and you need somewhere to stand and load plates.
The numbers that matter and what each one means
Load rating
The quoted figure almost always describes a static, settled load. Dropping weight, racking a bar hard and sideways force all eat into that margin. On benches, check whether the rating covers user plus load or the load alone, because those are very different numbers.
Steel gauge and upright size
Rack uprights commonly run from about 5 by 5 cm to 7.5 by 7.5 cm, with wall thickness of two to three millimetres. A heavier upright means less sway under load and a calmer frame when you rack the bar. Hole spacing of 5 cm is standard, and tighter spacing through the pressing range helps more than it sounds, since five centimetres of hip height often separates a good set-up from an awkward one.
Bar and plates
An Olympic bar is roughly 220 cm long, weighs 20 kg and has 50 mm sleeves; the shorter version is around 200 cm and 15 kg. Bars with 25 to 30 mm sleeves cost less but narrow your plate choice and any later upgrade.
On plates, watch the diameter. Plates of about 45 cm put the bar at the height deadlifts are meant to start from; smaller plates change the starting position and need blocks under them. Cast iron is cheaper per kilo and thinner, so more fits on the sleeve, while rubber-coated plates are quieter and kinder to the floor.
Treadmill motor power
Two figures get quoted: continuous and peak. Only continuous means anything. Walking and easy jogging are usually fine around 1.5 to 2 hp continuous, while regular running wants 2.5 to 3 hp or more, particularly above 90 kg bodyweight. Running also needs a belt of roughly 140 to 150 cm long and 45 to 55 cm wide; shorter is perfectly adequate for walking.
Exercise bikes and rowers have no motor at all, since resistance is magnetic, air or water. There, look at flywheel mass, typically between 5 and 20 kg, and whether the resistance climbs high enough to ever feel hard.
Ceiling height
Height stops more builds than floor area does. For someone of 180 cm, a bar pressed overhead finishes around 220 cm, and racks themselves stand 210 to 230 cm. Below 240 cm you handle overhead work carefully; below 220 cm, plan it seated or leave it out.
Flooring
Rubber tiles of 15 to 20 mm cover general training, and the zone where the bar comes down wants 30 to 40 mm or a doubled layer. This is the wrong place to economise: the floor protects the screed, cuts noise and keeps the rack planted. In a garage or basement, damp and corrosion are a separate problem and choosing materials that will not rust reshapes the whole list. In a flat above ground level, sort the noise question first, because some movements simply have to be swapped for quieter versions.
How much space it really takes
Barbell work needs about 6 to 8 m² as a floor, roughly a 2.5 by 3 m rectangle. That holds a rack, a bench and half a metre either side of the bar for plates and movement.
Dumbbells, bands and bodyweight work fit into 4 to 5 m², provided you have around 2 m of clear length for anything done lying down. If you are at the lower end, it is worth seeing what genuinely fits into six square metres and in what order to buy it.
A treadmill takes about 2 by 1 m plus at least half a metre of clear run-off behind it. That is close to a third of a small room given over to one kind of training, so be honest about the priority.
What it costs and in what order
Actual prices are not something anyone can quote usefully: they move with the market, exchange rates, delivery of heavy freight and whether you buy new or second hand, and the spread inside one category is often threefold. Proportions are more stable.
- Floor and room prep — 5 to 15 per cent. First, not last.
- Bar, 60 to 120 kg of plates, a rack with safety arms, an adjustable bench — 55 to 70 per cent. This is the gym.
- Pull-up bar and a set of bands — up to 5 per cent, covering a large share of pulling and warm-ups.
- Dumbbells or kettlebells — 10 to 20 per cent; if it has to be one of them, the difference between a kettlebell and a dumbbell is practical rather than a matter of taste.
- Cardio — only once the first three items are working.
- Cable and guided-path machines — last, if space and money remain.
A rough marker without inventing figures: a complete barbell set-up tends to cost about eight to eighteen months of an average local gym membership. Where you land in that range depends on second-hand plates, how heavy the rack frame is, and what you pay to get a pallet of iron to your door.
Common buying mistakes
Buying in order of appeal instead of order of use. The treadmill and the ab machine arrive first, the barbell last, and the barbell is the thing carrying the programme.
Too little weight. A 40 kg set feels ample for a month. For squats and deadlifts, 100 kg total is a realistic target inside the first year.
Ignoring the parts that wear out. Sleeve bearings, cables, pulleys and bench upholstery fail long before frames do. Check which components break first and whether they can be replaced before you commit.
Measuring only the floor plan. Ceiling height, doorway width and the route from the front door to the room are three separate checks.
Choosing folding kit on price rather than on space. Folding makes sense when the room has another job. If the room is yours alone, a fixed frame is steadier for the same money.
Who it pays off for, and who it does not
It pays off if you train three or more days a week, if the gym is more than twenty minutes away each way, if your training hours are awkward for a staffed facility, and if your programme rests on a handful of basic lifts.
It does not pay off if you are still working out what suits you and change the plan monthly, if your motivation leans heavily on other people being in the room, if you rent with an uncertain horizon, or if the budget only stretches to a weak version of everything. When to see a doctor
Before you start handling heavier loads, speak to a doctor if you have known heart disease or uncontrolled blood pressure, if effort brings on chest pain, unusual breathlessness or dizziness, if you have back pain that travels down a leg or comes with numbness and weakness, or if you are recovering from surgery or a joint injury. During pregnancy and after birth, agree the loading plan with your own doctor.
The short version
Floor and measurements first, ceiling height included. Then bar, plates, a rack with safety arms and an adjustable bench, because that combination carries about 80 per cent of the training. Rate load capacity with 20 to 30 per cent in hand, read only continuous power on a treadmill, and look at upright thickness on a rack. Cardio and cable machines come once the base works. Fewer pieces, each one still standing in three years.
