Six square metres is a strip of floor along a wall, three metres by two, or the corner of a bedroom. Serious strength training fits into that. Everything the internet wants to sell you does not, and that is where most people go wrong.

The usual planning error is measuring the kit instead of measuring the movement. A machine with a 60 x 120 cm footprint needs roughly another metre of clear floor beside it before you can actually work around it. Measure what is left over when everything is pushed against the wall, then start shopping.

The second question is order. Buy the biggest item first and the rest of your budget and floor space goes on making it fit. Start with the most flexible item and every purchase after it gets easier.

What a piece of kit has to earn its place with

In a small room, anything that stays has to pass four tests. If it fails one, leave it.

  • It covers at least two movement patterns. Push, pull, squat, hinge, carry. Dumbbells cover all five. A single-purpose machine covers half of one.
  • It lasts you two years. A dumbbell set that tops out at 10 kg per hand is finished in three or four months of consistent training. Look at the ceiling, not the starting weight.
  • It clears away in 30 seconds. If the room has another job, kit that cannot be moved quietly becomes the reason you skip sessions.
  • It is safe on your own. Nobody is there to lift a bar off your chest. That changes both what you buy and what you do with it.

The fifth test is noise, and in a flat it decides everything. Anything you set down needs somewhere quiet to land, and a rug is not it. There is more on that in the piece on training in a flat without the noise.

The specifications that matter, and what each one means

Load rating

A bench or rack rating covers you plus the weight. Leave 30 to 50 per cent above the total of your body weight and the heaviest load you plan to handle. Benches often carry two figures, one for lying and one for seated, because the load through the legs differs. Work from the lower one.

Steel: section, wall thickness, hole spacing

For anything that holds a bar, three numbers tell the story. Tube section (5 x 5 cm is the light class, 6 x 6 cm and up is the serious one), wall thickness (the gap between 2 and 3 mm is the gap between sway and stillness) and hole spacing. Tighter spacing through the chest and shoulder range, around 5 cm, means the safety arms sit exactly where you need them rather than five centimetres too high. Two sets of dimensions

For anything folding, you need both the open and the folded footprint. For anything overhead, you need your ceiling height. A barbell is 180 to 220 cm long and wants another 20 cm each side for loading plates. Larger plates, around 45 cm across, lift the bar to the height a deadlift is meant to start from; smaller plates leave the bar lower than your back would like.

Motor power, if you go for cardio

On a treadmill, read the continuous rating rather than the peak one, because peak describes a second of work and you want an hour of walking. Around 1.5 to 2 HP continuous handles walking and easy jogging; regular running wants 2.5 HP and up. Check belt width too, since anything under 45 cm feels narrow at pace, and belt length, because taller people have a longer stride. A treadmill is the heaviest and loudest item you can put in a flat, and usually the first one to go unused.

Weight increments

On adjustable dumbbells the ceiling matters less than the step. Jumps of 2 to 2.5 kg per hand let you keep progressing on overhead work; 5 kg jumps park you on the same weight for months. How much space and money it really takes

Split the space like this. Flooring takes about 4 square metres and that is where everything happens. A strip roughly 40 cm deep along the wall stores dumbbells and plates. A folded bench sits in 30 x 120 cm. Add a rack and it eats 1.3 x 1.2 m on its own, at which point only the bench and the weights fit alongside it.

For free movement you want a rectangle of about 200 x 100 cm. That covers press-ups, lunges, squats and everything you would do with dumbbells. A ceiling under 250 cm means standing overhead presses happen with dumbbells rather than a bar, and jumping is off the list.

On money, somebody else's figure is no use to you, since prices differ by market and shift by season. What helps is knowing what drives the range. With weights you pay for kilograms and for mechanism: cast iron plates are cheapest per kilogram, rubber-coated ones cost more for the coating and the quieter landing, and adjustable dumbbells cost the most per kilogram because the mechanism replaces ten pairs. With frames you pay for steel and build tolerance. With cardio you pay for the motor, the electronics and the warranty on that motor.

A split that works in a small room: roughly half the budget on weights, a quarter on bench and rack, a fifth on flooring, the remainder on small items. Flooring is the line people cut, and it is the one protecting both your floor and your relationship with the neighbours below.

The order to buy in

  1. Flooring. Rubber, 10 to 20 mm, or interlocking tiles doubled up where you set weights down. Without it you cannot use the rest at full effort.
  2. Adjustable dumbbells or kettlebells. One pair, topping out at 20 to 24 kg per hand at minimum. This is the item you can train your whole body with for years. Which of the two suits your training is worked through in kettlebell or dumbbell.
  3. A bench. Adjustable, folding, rated to at least 250 kg. It doubles the number of exercises you can do with the weights you already own.
  4. A pull-up bar. Bolted to the wall or the door frame rather than wedged into it. Pulling is the pattern that is hardest to cover at home.
  5. Bands and suspension straps. Cheap, light, and they cover what dumbbells cover badly, mainly horizontal rowing and shoulder work.
  6. Rack and barbell. Only if barbell squats and presses are the actual goal and the ceiling allows it. This is the end of the road, not the start.

Common buying mistakes

Buying a set of fixed dumbbells. Six pairs take up a metre of wall, cost about what one adjustable pair costs, and leave you under-loaded within six months.

Making cardio the first purchase. It takes the most room, loses value fastest, and does not improve on a walk outdoors. If conditioning is the goal, a skipping rope and the stairs in your building do the same job in a tenth of the space.

Forgetting the route in. Measure the door width, the turn on the staircase and the lift. A rack that will not go down the hallway is not a rack.

Buying it all at once. Get flooring and dumbbells, train for two months, then buy again. After two months you will know exactly what is missing, and it is almost never what you assumed at the start.

Treating safety as optional. Alone in a room you do not bench without safety arms and you do not chase maximum attempts. Dumbbells can simply be dropped to the side, which is why they suit a home setup better.

Who it pays off for, and who it does not

It pays off if you train at least three times a week and the gym is more than fifteen minutes away. It pays off for parents of small children, for people with unpredictable shifts, and for anyone running a simple programme built on dumbbells and body weight. A setup like that repays itself against membership fees within a year or two.

When to see a doctor

Joint pain lasting more than two weeks, chest pain or dizziness under effort, or a return to training after surgery or a long illness all deserve a check before you start loading anything. No purchase fixes a problem coming from the joint itself.

The short version

Six square metres holds everything strength training needs, as long as you protect a clear rectangle of roughly 200 x 100 cm. Start with flooring and one pair of adjustable dumbbells, add a bench and a pull-up bar, and add a rack and barbell only if that is genuinely the goal.
