Power rack or half rack: what fits at home and what is safer
How to choose between a power rack and a half rack at home: the space and ceiling height you need, the load ratings that matter, and the mistakes buyers make.

Six square metres of spare room, a 250 cm ceiling, and you want to squat on your own with nobody standing behind you. That is where the choice between a power rack and a half rack begins — and where most people get it wrong, because they look at the price before they look at the tape measure.
A power rack is a cage: four uprights, with safety bars running the full depth and supported at both ends. You stand inside it. A half rack has two loaded uprights and safety arms that stick out from the front, held at one end only. You stand in front of the frame. A squat stand is two uprights, usually with no real catch at all.
The difference only shows up when a rep fails. In a cage, the bar drops onto a bar that is pinned at both ends and stays there. On a half rack it drops onto a cantilevered arm, so you have to be lined up with those arms exactly. One step forward or to the side and the protection is not under you.
What a rack has to have
Safety bars, arms or straps that drop low enough. A quick test: set them so that at the bottom of your deepest squat the bar sits 2–3 cm above them. If the lowest setting will not do that, the rack is not doing the one job you bought it for.
Then J-cups lined with plastic or rubber, so the knurling on your bar does not get chewed up. Then an internal width that takes a 220 cm Olympic bar: roughly 110 cm between the uprights, plus about ten centimetres of clearance on each side so you can rack the bar without aiming.
And stability. A frame that rocks when you rack the bar is not merely annoying, it changes how you lift. You start setting the bar down cautiously instead of confidently, and that leaks into your technique.
The numbers and what they actually mean
Load rating
Published figures run from around 200 kg to over 1000 kg, and almost all of them describe a static load — a bar sitting still on the hooks. A bar dropping from height is a different kind of force, and that is where the margin gets spent.
For home use, a frame rated at 300–450 kg covers nearly every recreational lifter, since very few people squat over 200 kg in a spare room. What matters more than the headline number is whether the maker bothered to separate static from dynamic loading at all.
Steel profile and wall thickness
Entry-level frames use roughly 50×50 mm tube with a 2 mm wall. Mid-range moves to 60×60 mm, and heavier home or commercial frames run 75×75 mm with a 3 mm wall. Wall thickness decides stiffness more than the outside dimension does.
The fastest guide is shipping weight. A 40–60 kg frame is light and will want bolting down; 90–130 kg is solid home territory; anything over 150 kg stands still even when you bump into it mid-set.
Hole size and spacing
Holes are usually 16 mm or 25 mm. The larger size carries heavier attachments and spare pins are easy to find, but it ties you to that standard when you add accessories two years later.
Hole spacing is typically 5 cm. Better frames tighten that to 2,5 cm through the bench press zone, because five centimetres is a big jump there — the cup ends up either too low to unrack cleanly or too high to bring the bar to your chest.
Height and depth
Racks run from about 180 to 235 cm. The frame height is not the problem; the ceiling is. Allow 10–15 cm above the frame for assembly and for lifting the bar clear of the pins.
If you want to press overhead standing, you need roughly your own height plus 45–55 cm. Someone who is 180 cm tall needs about 230 cm of clear height, and pull-ups want another ten on top.
Power rack depth ranges from 60 to 120 cm. Short cages save floor space but cramp your walkout and struggle to fit a bench; around 90 cm is a comfortable compromise for most rooms.
Bolting down and flooring
Light half racks and squat stands realistically need bolting to the floor or extended feet. A power rack over 100 kg with plates loaded on the rear posts will usually stay put on its own, though anchoring extends its life too.
Underneath it all goes floor protection: rubber tiles 15–20 mm thick under the feet and wherever you set weights down. In a flat, avoid dropping the bar and pick coated plates instead, which we cover in the guide to rubber, steel and bumper plates.
How much space you really need
The frame itself takes about 1,2 × 1,2 m. That is the paper figure. The working area you actually need is at least 2,5 m wide and 2 m deep, because the bar is 220 cm long and has to clear the wall without scraping it.
Add somewhere for the plates. Ten plates leaning against a wall eat another half metre, and a plate tree beside the rack noticeably shortens the gaps between sets.
If your ceiling is under 220 cm, a full-height cage is out. That leaves a short power rack, a folding wall-mounted frame on a solid wall, or giving up on standing overhead pressing.
How much money you really need
Frame price tracks kilograms of steel almost linearly. Between the cheapest usable stand and a heavy home cage the gap is typically two to four times, and it buys wall thickness, weld quality, hole accuracy and finish.
The rack is not the biggest line, though. Once you add a bar, 100–150 kg of plates, a bench and flooring, the frame often comes to less than half the bill. Choosing an Olympic bar deserves as much thought as choosing the cage, since that is the part your hands are on every session.
Delivery is the cost people forget. A package over a hundred kilograms does not arrive like a book, and it is often left at the front of the building rather than in the room where it gets built.
Common buying mistakes
- Measuring the ceiling before the floor goes down — rubber tiles take 2 cm, which is exactly what ends up missing.
- A frame whose lowest safety position still sits above the bottom of your squat.
- A half rack left unbolted by someone squatting and pressing heavy.
- A cage too narrow for a bench to sit square, so you press half-way outside the frame.
- Buying far more rack than the training justifies: a 400 kg frame in a room where the heaviest squat is 80.
- A pull-up bar mounted so low you cannot hang at full stretch.
- Picking a hole standard without thinking about the attachments you will want later.
Who it pays off for, and who it does not
It pays off for anyone training with a barbell at least three times a week, alone, and planning to keep at it for years. The cage earns its space by letting you push close to failure without relying on luck.
A half rack is a sensible compromise when space is tight, when you need to approach the bar from the side, or when the frame has to sit against a wall. Bolted down, with the arms set properly every session, it is safe enough for most recreational loads.
It does not pay off for someone training twice a week on machines and dumbbells. That person gets more out of a decent pair of adjustable dumbbells and a bench than out of a cage that swallows a room. The same goes if you rent and move every year.

When to see a doctor
If the bar pins you or lands hard on the safeties and you are left with sharp pain that does not settle within a few days, swelling, or weakness in an arm or leg, get it looked at. The same applies to numbness, pins and needles, or pain that travels down the leg.
For dull back soreness after heavy sets, look first at technique and at how fast you added load. What actually helps prevent back pain is mostly dull and simple, and it works better than any gadget.
