Peanuts: Calories, Protein, and How They Fit Into Your Diet
Exact calorie and protein numbers for peanuts and peanut butter, realistic portion sizes, and how to fit them into a cut or a bulk without overshooting.

Peanuts are either banned outright because "they're too fatty", or eaten straight from the bag during a match until two kilos appear out of nowhere. Both mistakes come from the same place — nobody measured anything. Here are the actual numbers and a few concrete ways to fit peanuts into your day, whether you're cutting or gaining.
The numbers per 100 grams
Values shift slightly by variety and processing, but raw or dry-roasted unsalted peanuts land roughly here per 100 g:
- Calories: about 567 kcal
- Protein: 25–26 g
- Fat: 49–50 g, mostly monounsaturated
- Carbs: about 16 g, of which 8–9 g is fiber
- Magnesium: about 168 mg, roughly 40% of a daily requirement
- Potassium: about 700 mg
Translated: in calorie density peanuts sit closer to pure fat than to meat, and in protein they land halfway between walnuts and chicken. Not a "bad" food — just an extremely easy food to overeat.
What a real portion looks like
A single peanut kernel weighs roughly 0.8–1 gram, which is why "a few peanuts" turns into 80 grams before you notice. The breakdown:
- A 30 g handful (about 30–35 kernels): ~170 kcal, 7.5 g protein, 15 g fat
- Small packet, 50 g: ~285 kcal, 13 g protein
- Large bag, 200 g: over 1,100 kcal and 51 g protein
- Tablespoon of peanut butter (16 g): ~95 kcal, 4 g protein
- A heaped "eyeball" spoon from the jar: usually 25–30 g, so 150–175 kcal
One habit fixes 90% of the problem: for the first two weeks, weigh the portion on a kitchen scale and tip it into a small bowl. The bag goes back in the cupboard. After two weeks your eye knows what 30 grams looks like.
Why peanuts shouldn't be your main protein
Peanuts are a legume, not a tree nut, and their protein has a weaker amino acid profile than meat, eggs, or dairy — specifically lower in lysine and methionine. There's about 1.7 g of leucine per 100 g, and leucine is the amino acid that drives muscle protein synthesis; a solid meal wants roughly 2.5–3 g of it. That means you'd need about 150 g of peanuts (close to 850 kcal) to match the leucine in 120 g of chicken breast (about 200 kcal).
The comparison that settles it:
- 100 g chicken breast: ~165 kcal, 31 g protein
- 100 g peanuts: ~567 kcal, 26 g protein
So treat peanuts as a fat source that happens to carry some protein, not as a line item you count on to hit your target. At 80 kg aiming for 1.6–2.2 g of protein per kilo (128–176 g per day), peanuts can realistically contribute 10–15 g of that. Not more.
Peanuts in a deficit
Peanuts work on a cut under two conditions: you measure them, and you eat them alongside something with volume. Concrete moves:
- Cap it at 20–30 g per day (115–170 kcal) and log it before you eat it.
- Put them inside a meal, not between meals: 20 g of peanuts over a salad with 300 g of vegetables and 150 g of tuna keeps you full far longer than the same peanuts eaten alone.
- Buy them in the shell. Shelling slows the pace and realistically halves what you eat in the same amount of time.
- If the bag "opens itself" three evenings in a row, that's not a discipline problem, it's a shopping problem — don't keep it in the house for a month.
Peanuts on a surplus
If you're naturally lean, train 4 times a week, and struggle to eat enough, peanuts are one of the easiest ways to add calories without feeling stuffed. Two tablespoons of peanut butter (32 g) in a shake with 300 ml of milk and a banana adds about 190 kcal and 8 g of protein, and takes 30 seconds to drink. If you need 300–400 extra calories a day, 50 g of peanuts plus one larger meal covers it painlessly.
Salted, roasted, butter — what actually differs
Raw and dry-roasted peanuts are essentially identical in calories; oil roasting adds 30–50 kcal per 100 g. Salted peanuts carry 400–600 mg of sodium per 100 g, about a quarter of the daily upper limit — relevant mainly if your blood pressure is high or you eat larger amounts. With peanut butter, read the ingredients: peanuts only (plus maybe salt) gives roughly 590 kcal and 25 g protein per 100 g, while versions with added sugar and vegetable oils have similar calories and less protein. Peanut-flavored puffs and similar snacks are not peanuts — they're mostly corn meal.
When to see a doctor
Peanut allergy is one of the more serious food allergies and it doesn't go away by "getting used to it". Seek medical help immediately if you get swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat, trouble breathing, hives, or dizziness after eating peanuts — that's an emergency. Book an appointment if you have persistent digestive symptoms (bloating, diarrhea) after peanuts, if you're introducing peanuts to a child under one year old and there's allergy in the family, or if you have kidney disease and your potassium and phosphorus intake is restricted. Throw out any peanuts that taste bitter, look moldy, or smell off — mold on badly stored peanuts can produce aflatoxins.
