Almost everyone starts with the same question: how many kilos. There is no single answer, because the same person with the same bell will swing it comfortably for twenty reps and then struggle to press it overhead five times. The weight follows the exercise, not the lifter.

The second half of the question is the type: cast iron or steel, one bell or a pair, fixed or adjustable. Here is what actually shows up in training, and what is just catalogue copy.

What a kettlebell genuinely needs

The list is shorter than you would think. Get these right and the bell will outlast your interest in it.

  • Handle and body cast as one piece. A welded joint or a rough seam where the handle meets the bell is both the weak point and the thing that tears your palm.
  • A smooth handle without thick lacquer. A glossy finish turns slippery the moment your hands sweat, and chalk makes it worse. You want matt and slightly textured.
  • A flat, stable base. The bell should sit still on the floor and not rock when you put weight on it.
  • A window that takes both hands comfortably. If your fingers are cramped during a two-handed swing, the shape is wrong.
  • Honest weight. A couple of per cent off is nothing; larger discrepancies make orderly progression meaningless.

The specs that matter, and what each one means

Material and construction

Cast iron is the default for home training: cheaper per kilo, tough, and the bell physically grows as the weight goes up. Steel competition bells keep identical outside dimensions across the whole range, so the feel in your hand and on your forearm does not change as you move up. You pay for that with a noticeably higher price per kilo.

Vinyl-coated bells and those filled with concrete or sand are the cheapest and the shortest-lived. They will survive a few months of light work; they will not survive regular swings at 24 kg.

Handle diameter and width

Most handles fall somewhere between 30 and 38 mm. A thinner handle, around 33 mm, is easier to hold and the sensible choice for smaller hands and for high-rep sets. A thicker handle burns your grip faster, so the set ends because a finger gave out rather than because your hips and back were tired.

On cast iron bells the handle usually thickens as the weight rises, which is why a 32 kg bell can be unusable for someone with small hands even when the strength is there. If you are buying online, check that number before anything else.

Size and shape

With cast iron, the body grows with the load, so a heavy bell rests on your forearm quite differently in the rack position. Competition bells change wall thickness instead and keep the same shell. Neither is a flaw, but it matters if you plan a lot of rack or overhead work.

Weight increments

The classic range steps in 4 kg jumps: 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, 32. Competition bells add 2 kg steps at the lighter end. That difference counts more than it sounds: going from 12 to 16 kg is a third more weight, which a swing barely notices and an overhead press absolutely does.

Adjustable bells

One adjustable replaces three to five fixed bells and saves space. It costs more per unit, the mechanism is an extra failure point, and the body is usually bulkier and less comfortable against the forearm. For goblet squats, presses and rows they are fine; for fast swings and cleans where the bell lands on your arm, less so.

Which weight to buy first

Split the exercises into two groups. Swings and everything driven by the hips tolerate far more load. Overhead presses, Turkish get-ups and anything single-arm above the shoulder need roughly half that, sometimes less.

Rough starting points, assuming you are learning the technique from scratch:

  • Woman with no training background: 8 kg for swings, 6 kg for presses and get-ups.
  • Woman who trains strength regularly: 12–16 kg for swings, 8–12 kg for presses.
  • Man with no training background: 12–16 kg for swings, 8–12 kg for presses.
  • Man who trains strength regularly: 20–24 kg for swings, 16 kg for presses.

If you are buying a single bell, buy the swing weight. The press will feel too heavy for the first few weeks, but you grow into a heavy bell and never grow into a light one. Buy the second only when the first stops feeling like work, usually one step up.

Space and money, realistically

Space: about two metres by two metres of clear floor, and a ceiling that leaves roughly 40 cm above your outstretched arm when you stand tall. Swings need a little room behind you, though less than people assume.

Flooring is the cost most people forget. Sooner or later the bell gets dropped. A rubber mat around 15–20 mm thick under the working area solves both the noise and the cracked tiles. A thin yoga mat solves neither.

Money: prices are effectively set per kilo, so a 24 kg bell of a given type costs roughly twice what the 12 kg version does. Steel competition bells cost significantly more per kilo than cast iron, and adjustables cost most per unit. Factor in delivery too, because shipping a 20 to 30 kg parcel is a real share of the bill. A two-bell setup plus a mat is not a small outlay, but it is a one-off.

Common buying mistakes

  • Three bells at once. Buy one, train with it for three months, then add. What you actually lack only becomes obvious in training.
  • Going too light out of caution. A 4 or 6 kg swing turns into an arm lift instead of a hip hinge, and you learn the wrong pattern.
  • Going too heavy out of pride. Nobody learns technique with 32 kg; they only learn compensations.
  • Buying from a photo alone. Handle diameter, window width and true weight are invisible in a product shot.
  • A high-gloss finish. It looks tidy in the box and slips by the second set.
  • A matched pair before you need one. Double-bell work comes late; until then the second bell is money sitting on the floor.

Who it suits, and who it does not

It suits you if you train at home, have limited space and want one implement covering both strength and conditioning. It also works well alongside gym training, particularly for hip work and short conditioning finishers. The swing is a clean hinge and, done properly, fits neatly into what actually helps prevent back pain. It suits you less if your goal is a maximal squat or deadlift, or serious hypertrophy. There you get far more from an olympic barbell and the plates you load onto it, because the load rises in small, controlled steps.

Be cautious if your shoulder is a problem. Everything overhead asks for a stable shoulder blade and decent mobility, so read up on what genuinely prevents shoulder injuries first, and buy lighter than you think you need.

When to see a doctor

If pain in a shoulder, elbow, knee or your back lasts longer than two to three weeks, wakes you at night, or comes with numbness or weakness in an arm or leg, that is a matter for examination rather than for choosing a lighter bell. The same goes for dizziness or chest pain under exertion.

The short version

Pick by exercise: heavier for swings, roughly half that for overhead pressing. One single-cast bell with a smooth handle around 33 mm and a flat base covers your first few months. Budget for flooring straight away, add the second bell only when the first feels easy, and pay for competition steel only if you do long sets and want the same feel across every weight.
