Why Is My Resting Heart Rate High
What a high resting heart rate actually means, how to measure it properly, which factors raise it by 5 to 15 beats, and when to see a doctor.

If your watch shows 78 in the morning instead of your usual 60, that is not automatically a reason to panic, but it is a data point that means something. Resting heart rate is the cheapest indicator you have of how your body is handling training, sleep, stress and food. Below is what counts as normal, how to measure it properly, what usually sits behind an elevated number, and what to actually do about it.
What counts as normal
The reference range for adults is 60–100 beats per minute. People who train endurance regularly usually sit at 45–60, and well-trained cyclists and runners at 35–45. That means "normal" for you is not the same as normal from a textbook: if you spent years at 52 and now you are at 68, that 16-beat gap is information, even though 68 is technically inside the range.
Practical rule: look at your 7-day average, not a single morning. A 3–5 beat deviation on one day is noise. An 8–10 beat deviation that lasts 5 days or more is a signal that something needs changing.
First, check that you are measuring correctly
A good share of "high" readings are just bad measurements. Before you go hunting for a cause, make sure the number is real.
- Measure in the morning, right after waking, before getting out of bed, before coffee and before looking at your phone.
- Lie still for 2–3 minutes, then measure.
- By hand: find the pulse on the thumb side of your wrist or on your neck and count for a full 60 seconds. Counting 15 seconds and multiplying by 4 turns one missed beat into a 4-beat error.
- Wrist watch: the band sits about two fingers above the wrist bone, tight enough not to slide but not squeezing. A loose watch can read 10–15 beats off.
- Do not use a reading taken when an alarm pulled you out of deep sleep, or right after a trip to the bathroom — that is routinely 8–12 beats higher.
The most common reasons
Training and unfinished recovery
A hard leg session, a long run or a race raises resting heart rate by 5–15 beats for the next 24–72 hours. That is a normal response. The problem is when it stays elevated for 7 days or more alongside falling strength and no appetite for training — that is accumulated fatigue, not weakness.
Sleep
One night of 5 hours instead of 8 raises your morning pulse by 3–8 beats. Three such nights in a row and the effect stacks. Aim for 7–9 hours in bed, with a wake time that varies by no more than ±30 minutes.
Alcohol, caffeine and nicotine
Two or three beers in the evening will lift your morning heart rate by 5–10 beats, even when you feel nothing. Caffeine has a half-life of 5–6 hours, so a 5 p.m. coffee is still working at midnight — put your last dose 8 hours before bed and stay under 400 mg per day (roughly 4 large coffees). Nicotine adds 10–20 beats within the first 30 minutes.
Dehydration and too little salt
Losing 2% of body mass in fluid (1.6 kg for an 80 kg person) raises heart rate by 5–10 beats, because blood volume is lower and the heart has to beat more often. The same happens with very low carbohydrate intake (under 100 g per day) and low sodium, where the body sheds water in the first 3–5 days.
Stress and anxiety
A work deadline, exams or an unresolved family situation keep the sympathetic system switched on and add 5–15 beats without a single workout. This is the most common cause in people whose sleep, training and food are all in order.
Illness
Every degree Celsius of fever raises heart rate by roughly 8–10 beats. Resting heart rate often jumps 24–48 hours before you feel the sore throat or the fatigue, which makes it a useful early signal to skip the hard session.
Detraining and body mass
After 2–3 weeks of a complete break, plasma volume drops by 5–12% and resting heart rate climbs 4–10 beats. It comes back over a similar period of regular cardio. Every extra 10 kg of fat mass also means more cardiac work at rest.
Medication and deficiencies
Nasal decongestants, asthma inhalers, thyroid medication, some antidepressants and pre-workout formulas with heavy caffeine all raise heart rate directly. Iron deficiency and anemia are a common and easily missed cause, especially in women and long-distance runners.
A plan for the next three weeks
- Measure 14 mornings in a row under identical conditions and write the number down. Without that you are guessing.
- Two weeks with no alcohol and caffeine under 200 mg per day, last dose by 2 p.m.
- Aim for 7.5 hours in bed, same wake time on weekends too.
- Fluids: 30–35 ml per kilogram of body mass daily (2.4–2.8 l for 80 kg), plus 500–750 ml per hour of training.
- Cardio: 150 minutes per week at conversational pace, for example 3×40 or 5×30 minutes. This is the only reliable way to bring the baseline down permanently.
- If you have done 5 hard sessions a week for three straight weeks, insert a week with 3 sessions and 40% fewer sets.
- After 14 days, compare the average of week one and week two. A realistic shift is 3–8 beats downward.
When to see a doctor
- Immediately, urgently: chest pain or pressure, shortness of breath on light effort, fainting or the feeling that you are about to faint.
- Resting heart rate consistently over 100 for more than two weeks with no illness, alcohol or heavy training to explain it.
- An irregular pulse, pronounced skipped beats, or episodes of pounding that start and stop abruptly at over 150 beats.
- Unintended weight loss, hand tremor, heavy sweating, heat intolerance — ask for thyroid testing (TSH).
- Fatigue, pallor and breathlessness after two flights of stairs — ask for a full blood count and ferritin.
- If you already take medication for blood pressure, thyroid or asthma, do not change the dose yourself; report the change to your doctor.
An elevated resting heart rate is rarely a disease by itself. It is almost always downstream of something — sleep, alcohol, fatigue, infection or a deficiency. The job is to find that something, not to stare at the number.
The short version
- What matters is your weekly average and the deviation from it, not the absolute textbook number.
- Measure in the morning, in bed, still for 2–3 minutes, counting a full 60 seconds or using a properly tightened watch.
- Sleep under 6 hours, alcohol, caffeine after 2 p.m. and 2% dehydration each add 5–10 beats.
- An increase 24–72 hours after a hard session is normal; more than 7 days elevated means you need an easier week.
- See a doctor if it is consistently over 100, if it is irregular, or if it comes with chest pain, breathlessness or fainting.
