Two machines, pedals on both, and often a two- or threefold gap in price. The useful question isn't which one is better. It's what kind of training you'll actually be doing over the next year or two.

If you want 40 quiet minutes with something on a screen, and other people in the house will ride it too, one type suits you. If you're after short intervals, standing climbs and sprints, the other does. Here's the difference, the specs worth reading, and the mistakes people make at the till.

The one difference everything else follows from

An exercise bike, upright or recumbent, has a freewheel. Stop pedalling and the pedals stop. You sit tall, the bars are close, resistance is set with a knob or a button, and the flywheel is light. It's built for steady turning without much load on your back, shoulders or hands.

A spin bike has a fixed drive. The flywheel and the cranks are mechanically joined, so the pedals keep turning as long as the wheel does. You can't simply stop — you slow it with your legs or pull the brake. The riding position leans forward like a road bike, and the frame is built to take your full weight when you come out of the saddle.

That single mechanical difference drives everything else: frame mass, price, noise, safety, and how easily somebody else in the house can just hop on.

The non-negotiables

  • A saddle that adjusts up and down and fore and aft. Height alone isn't enough. Without fore-aft, your knee ends up sitting over your toes and you'll feel it after twenty minutes.
  • Handlebars adjustable at least for height, and fore-aft too on a spin bike.
  • A weight limit with 20–25 kg of headroom over your body weight.
  • Stability under full load. If the frame rocks when you stand, it isn't an interval machine.
  • A brake that stops the flywheel immediately on any fixed-drive bike. That's safety kit, not a feature.
  • Wear parts you can actually buy: pedals, saddle, brake pad or felt.

The specs and what each one means

Flywheel

The flywheel carries momentum through the dead spots in your pedal stroke. Exercise bikes use fairly light wheels; spin bikes run considerably heavier, often double or more. But mass isn't the whole story. Where the mass sits matters — weight at the rim carries far more inertia than weight near the hub — and so does the gearing between crank and wheel. A heavy flywheel on a flimsy frame rides worse than a lighter one on a good frame.

Resistance type

Friction resistance is a pad pressing on the wheel. It's cheap, gives a huge range of load, but it wears down, squeaks when it gets dusty and eventually needs replacing. Magnetic resistance never touches the wheel, runs close to silent and needs no maintenance, but it pushes the price up. In a flat, or if you train early or late, magnetic wins nearly every time.

The motor that isn't there

Unlike a treadmill, neither type has a motor driving you. If there's a plug, it's powering the console or a small servo that shifts magnets when a programme changes resistance. The wattage of that servo tells you nothing about quality. What does matter: whether the console runs on batteries, on mains power, or is self-powered by your pedalling.

Belt or chain

A belt is quieter and needs no lubrication. A chain is durable but noisier and wants oil every few months. At home, the belt is the easier life.

Weight limit and frame mass

Stated user limits are measured statically, with someone sitting still. Sprinting out of the saddle generates forces well above your body weight, which is why the headroom matters. The total mass of the machine is a crude but honest proxy for stability — light frames sway. Check for transport wheels at the front too, so you can shift it on your own.

The console numbers

Cadence, time and resistance level are reliable. Calories and watts are estimates unless the bike has genuine power measurement, which is rare at home-use prices. Hand-grip heart rate is the weakest link — the reading jumps the moment your grip changes. If heart rate matters to you, use a chest strap or a sports watch and know what it's really measuring, then pair it to the bike over Bluetooth.

Pedals and stance width

Toe cages work with any trainers. Clip-in systems need cycling shoes but give a much better connection. Dual-sided pedals cover both. Stance width between the pedals is almost never listed but you'll feel it — a wide stance bothers some people's knees.

Space and money, realistically

Budget roughly 100–130 cm of length and 50–60 cm of width for the machine, plus 50–70 cm of clear floor around it for mounting and maintenance. That's about 2 m² you can't use for anything else.

Ceiling height is the measurement everyone forgets. Standing on the pedals of a spin bike puts your head 25–35 cm above your normal standing height. In a loft conversion or a basement, that can decide the whole purchase.

Put a mat of the right thickness and size underneath. It protects the floor, cuts vibration reaching the neighbours, and keeps sweat off the boards.

On price, ratios are more honest than figures, since markets differ. A decent magnetic spin bike typically costs two to three times a decent upright of comparable build quality. What pushes the price up: frame mass, magnetic resistance, bearing quality and the length of the frame warranty. What pulls it down: plastic in load-bearing parts, a short warranty and a console stuffed with programmes nobody uses. Add the extras — mat, possibly a gel saddle or cover, and shoes if you go clip-in.

Where people go wrong

  • Shopping on flywheel weight. It's one number among ten that decide how a bike rides.
  • Skipping the fit check. A bike you can't adjust to your body is a bike you'll stop using within a month.
  • Buying a spin bike to watch telly on. The forward lean and narrow saddle aren't built for it. It becomes a clothes rack by week three.
  • Buying an upright for hard intervals. A light frame and freewheel don't take standing efforts.
  • No headroom on the weight limit. A 100 kg rating for a 95 kg rider is cutting it fine.
  • Trusting the calorie readout. Use it to compare your own sessions, not as a real figure.
  • Forgetting delivery and assembly. Check box weight, doorway width and whether it comes in parts.
  • Expecting the bike to fix pain. Riding can help, but knee injury prevention takes more than pedalling.

Who each one suits

An exercise bike makes sense if you ride 30–60 minutes at an easy to moderate pace, if leaning forward bothers your back, if several people of different heights share it, or if you're rebuilding after a long break. The same holds when you're putting together sensible training in your fifties, where joints and consistency matter more than peak power.

A spin bike makes sense if you do intervals, if you ride outdoors and need a winter substitute, if you like getting out of the saddle, and if you have somewhere that noise and vibration won't cause trouble. It doesn't make sense if your main goal is easy turning in front of a screen, or if the forward position aggravates your neck or lower back.

When to see a doctor

Speak to a doctor before starting if you have known heart disease, uncontrolled blood pressure, chest pain on exertion, or you're returning after knee or hip surgery. Do the same if pain persists after a few days of rest and a saddle adjustment, or if you get pins and needles down a leg or feel faint while riding.

The short version

Freewheel versus fixed drive is the real difference; everything else follows from it. The exercise bike is for calmer, longer, cheaper riding. The spin bike is for intervals and out-of-saddle work, and it asks for more money, more space and more tolerance for noise. Before you compare spec sheets, check three things: saddle and bar adjustment, weight limit with headroom, and resistance type. Those decide whether you're still riding it a year from now.
