Pull-ups at home: how to choose a bar and bands that work
Choosing pull-up kit for a flat: load ratings, fitting types, doorway measurements and assistance bands, plus the mistakes that mean buying twice.

You hang from the bar, pull as hard as you can, and nothing moves. That is where most people start, and it comes down to two pieces of kit: something solid overhead, and a way to take part of your bodyweight off while your back catches up.
No models here, and no brands. Just what the equipment has to do, what the numbers on the box actually mean, and the mistakes that have people buying a second bar six weeks after the first.
What the kit genuinely has to do
First, the bar has to be boring. No movement, no creak, no slipping under your hands. Feel a millimetre of shift on the first pull and your body tenses up, and the set is finished before it started.
Second, it has to let you hang with arms fully straight, knees unbent, feet clear of the floor. The pull-up is learned from the bottom, out of a dead hang, not from halfway up.
Third, you need a way to reduce the load. Usually that is looped resistance bands, though a low bar for horizontal rows works too, with the angle of your body setting the difficulty. Without either, all you have is negatives, and negatives on their own mostly mean waiting.
Fourth, a grip that does not shred your palms. A bare thin tube with no texture and foam that spins loosely on the tube are two versions of the same problem.
Three ways of fitting one, and what each asks of your flat
Pressure-fit doorway bar
Wedges between the door frame with no drilling. The appeal is obvious, but it needs a flat, solid frame, enough depth in the reveal, and a doorway inside the stated range. On very narrow or very wide openings the clamping force drops off.
This type does not tolerate swing. Kipping, kicking your legs and dropping hard at the bottom are three good ways to end up holding the bar mid-set.
Bolted doorway bar
Screwed into brackets above the frame. Far steadier than a pressure fit, but it needs drilling and a wall that will hold something. Plasterboard with no timber behind it and hollow blockwork are the usual reason a bracket comes away with a chunk of wall attached.
Wall or ceiling mount
The most stable option, and the only one that takes swinging, grip changes and added weight later without argument. It needs a load-bearing wall or a concrete slab, and the correct fixing for that material. If you do not know what is behind your plaster, that is a question for someone who does, not something to find out by trying.
The numbers, and what each one means
Load rating. The figure on the box is nearly always static: how much weight can hang there quietly. A pull-up is not quiet. Pulling hard out of the bottom and dropping back down produces brief forces of roughly two to three times bodyweight. Leave at least thirty to fifty per cent headroom over your own weight, and more if you plan to add a weight belt later.
Steel and wall thickness. Serious bars tend to sit around 1.5 to 2 mm of tube wall. Thinner than that and the middle flexes, and repeated flex eventually becomes a permanent bend. You can judge the welds by eye: a full, even seam rather than a few tacked spots.
Grip diameter. Usually somewhere between 28 and 38 mm. Thinner is easier to hold and the sensible choice while your grip is the weak link. Thicker tube loads the forearms harder, which is useful later but right now may be the reason you drop off before your back has had enough.
Measurements. Take three before you order anything: the clear width of the opening, the depth of the reveal, and the height from floor to where the bar would sit. Internal doors in flats mostly give an opening between 60 and 90 cm, and telescopic bars cover a range around that. The ends of any adjustment range are always weaker than the middle.
Headroom. Hanging, you want roughly 20 to 30 cm between the top of your head and the bar so your chin clears without meeting the frame. Without it you train a shortened rep and never learn the finish, which is the hardest part.
Bands. A standard loop is about a metre long, with widths of roughly 13, 21, 32 and 45 mm. Assistance runs broadly from five to fifteen kilos on the thinnest, fifteen to thirty on a mid width, and thirty or more on the widest. It is not constant: the help is greatest at the bottom where the band is stretched furthest, and nearly gone at the top where the pull-up is hardest. That is why two bands of different strengths are worth more than one.
Space and money, realistically
This is modest kit space-wise. A pressure-fit bar needs one doorway and somewhere to put it down. A wall mount wants roughly 40 to 60 cm of clearance from the wall to the bar, plus a floor zone nobody walks through. A ceiling mount only works with a ceiling of around 2.4 m or more, otherwise you hang with bent knees.
Price is not about the model, it is about what pushes it up: steel thickness and quality, weld quality, a tested and documented load rating, the fixings supplied, and grip width. The cheapest pressure-fit bar and a proper wall mount are not the same product at two prices, they are two different things. Bands are a rounding error in the budget and do most of the work, so buying two rather than one is the easy call.
Common buying mistakes
- Ordering before measuring, so the bar sits at the very end of its range and slips.
- Reading the load rating without leaving headroom for dynamic force.
- Drilling into plasterboard or hollow block with whatever plugs came in the box.
- Buying one very heavy band that lifts you to the top without you doing much.
- Going too wide on grip at the start, which shortens the rep and flatters your progress.
- Mounting the bar where you cannot hang with straight arms.
Who it pays off for, and who it does not
It pays off if you have one decent doorway or a load-bearing wall, train two or three times a week, and have a specific target: one clean pull-up. With a bar and two bands the plan is roughly this. Dead hangs, 3 sets of 20 to 40 seconds. Negatives, 3 to 5 sets of 3 lowers taking 4 to 6 seconds each. Banded pull-ups in sets of 5 to 8. When you can manage 8 with the thinnest band, the first unassisted rep is usually close. The same logic of shaving assistance away applies when you are adding difficulty without buying more weight.
It does not pay off if you rent somewhere you cannot drill and no doorway suits a pressure fit. Rings on a safe anchor, or horizontal rows using back training kit that needs no bar at all, are a fair choice rather than a consolation prize.
If you are carrying a lot of extra weight right now, a bar will sit unused for months because the strength-to-bodyweight maths is against you. Starting with training built around a heavier bodyweight and coming back to the bar later is the more useful order.
Whichever route you take, the first five minutes belong to the shoulders and shoulder blades, and a short warm-up at home needs less equipment than people assume.
When to see a doctor
Shoulder pain that appears in the hang itself, tingling or weakness running down the arm, or a previous shoulder or elbow operation are all reasons to ask a doctor or physiotherapist before pushing on. Tight forearms and sore lats after the first few sessions are a different matter and settle on their own.
In short
Measure the doorway before you order. Look for a load rating with thirty to fifty per cent headroom, decent steel, a grip around 28 to 32 mm, and enough height for a full hang. Buy two bands of different strengths rather than one. Everything beyond that is detail, and the first rep comes from negatives and removing assistance, not from a pricier bar.
