Lifting straps and hooks: when to use them, when to train without
How to choose lifting straps or hooks, which construction details actually matter, what they realistically cost, and when bare hands do the better job.

On your fourth set of deadlifts the bar starts sliding out of your fingers before your back and legs have registered that anything was heavy. That is usually the moment someone first thinks about straps. The useful question is not whether straps are cheating, but whether your grip is genuinely capping the session or you are simply tired at the end of a hard week.
Straps and hooks add no strength. They take the grip out of the equation so the muscle you are actually training gets a full set. If the bar slips on rep eight of ten, a strap solves a clearly defined problem. If it slips on rep two, something else is wrong — bar thickness, sweat, technique, or the fact that you have never trained your grip at all.
When to bring them in
A workable rule: straps enter the picture when your grip gives out before the target muscle on at least two consecutive sets, on the same lift, and that repeats over two to three weeks. One sweaty-palmed session is not a purchase decision.
The lift matters too. Grip is the bottleneck most often on deadlifts and their variations, on barbell rows once sets go past eight reps, on long shrug sets, and on any hanging work lasting more than about thirty seconds. On the bench press, the squat and most machines, straps do nothing at all.
Timing cuts the other way as well. In the first six to twelve months of training, your grip and forearms grow alongside everything else if you let them. Strap up from day one and that window closes quietly — you only notice years later, when you try to hold something heavy without help.
What the kit actually has to do
The list is shorter than sellers imply. A strap has to be long enough for at least two full wraps around the bar, wide enough not to bite into your palm, and stitched so the loop cannot pull apart under load.
A hook has to spread pressure across the whole wrist with a proper cuff, use metal that will not bend, and carry a facing that does not slide on the bar. Everything beyond that is detail rather than function.
Three shapes and what each is for
- Lasso — a band with a loop you push your hand through, then wrap the tail round the bar. The most versatile shape, works on everything, comes off fast.
- Closed loop (figure-of-eight) — hand and bar sit inside a sealed circle. Holds the most, releases the slowest, so it is wrong for anything overhead or anything you might need to drop.
- Hooks — a metal hook fixed to a wrist cuff, with your fingers barely working. A genuine answer for a hand injury or poor finger control, but they give you the least feel for the bar.
The specs that matter and what each one means
- Material. Cotton webbing grips a knurled bar best and sits comfortably on skin, but it soaks up sweat and wears out. Nylon lasts longer and absorbs less, yet slides on smooth bars. Leather outlasts both and does not stretch, though it wraps less easily and needs a few sessions to soften.
- Length. Shorter straps, with a working tail of around half a metre, give one to two wraps and come off quickly between sets. Longer ones give three wraps and more security on top sets, but get in the way on thin bars and machine handles.
- Width. Three to four centimetres is the standard. Narrower cuts into the palm under heavy loads; wider refuses to lie flat and folds into ridges that rub.
- Stitching. The loop join is the weak point. Look for several dense rows, ideally a box with diagonals through it. A single sparse row is the first thing to fail.
- Padding. Neoprene or thin foam where the strap crosses the wrist reduces pressure. On hooks it is essential; on straps it is preference, and a thick layer is actively unhelpful because it kills feel and lets the strap rotate.
- On hooks, the metal. The stated load rating is the least useful number, because the metal is almost never the limit — your wrist is. Depth matters more, so the bar cannot pop out, along with a rolled rather than sharp edge.
- Fit to your bars. Thick bars and fat handles need longer straps. A short strap on a thick bar manages barely one wrap and slips.
Space and money, realistically
Space is nil. A pair of straps lives in the side pocket of a bag and asks nothing of your flat, which sets them apart from nearly every other piece of training kit.
Money is the easy part. Cotton lasso straps sit among the cheapest gym items you can buy — typically less than a decent pair of gloves, and a fraction of what a lifting belt costs. Hooks usually run several times the price of plain straps because of the metal and the cuff, while leather figure-of-eights land somewhere in between.
Within a single category, the spread comes down to three things: material, stitch quality, and the mark-up on the name. The third costs the most and gives the least.
How much training to keep bare-handed
The rule that works: straps on the last one or two working sets of a heavy lift, nothing else. In practice that leaves 70 to 80 per cent of your total pulling volume on a raw grip.
Warm-ups always strapless. Sets of eight or fewer where the grip holds, strapless. Sets of twelve and up on rows, where the forearms quit first and the back is the point — that is where a strap earns its place.
Train grip deliberately twice a week, five to ten minutes a time: bar hangs for three or four sets of 20–40 seconds, farmer's walks for three sets of 30–40 metres, and 10–15 second holds at the top of a deadlift. Common buying mistakes
- Buying hooks before ever trying plain straps. Hooks answer a narrower problem and cost you the most bar feel.
- Straps that are too short. The most frequent error, and you only find out on a thick bar.
- Thick foam sold as comfort. It feels good for a fortnight, then the foam crushes flat and the strap starts twisting.
- Choosing on looks rather than stitching and material. On cheap kit the seam fails first, exactly as with larger gear — worth reading on which gym equipment breaks first before you spend.
- Figure-of-eights for everything. For overhead work, or anything you may need to bail from, a closed loop is the wrong tool.
- Using straps to paper over technique. If your back rounds at 60 per cent of your max, a strap only extends the set you are getting wrong.
Who it pays off for, and who it doesn't
They pay off for people doing regular heavy pulling whose forearms measurably fail before their back — commonly after the first or second year of training. They also help anyone with small hands relative to bar diameter, anyone running high rowing volume, and anyone returning from a finger or hand injury with a doctor's clearance.
They do not pay off in your first year unless there is a clear medical reason. They do not pay off if you train mostly on cable machines and handles, where grip is rarely the limit. And if you compete under rules that ban straps, you need a plan that keeps some heavy sets permanently strapless.
Pulling straps and a waist belt solve entirely different problems and do not substitute for one another; when a lifting belt genuinely helps depends on the lift and the load rather than habit.
If you are not sure your grip really goes first, write it down. A note against the set saying the grip failed is enough — any decent training log app allows that, and after a month the answer is obvious.
When to see a doctor
Tingling or numb fingers that show up at night or persist away from the gym, wrist pain that has not settled after two weeks of rest, swelling, and sudden unexplained loss of grip strength — none of these are equipment problems. Straps and hooks can mask the symptom long enough for the underlying issue to grow.
The same applies if a hook cuff leaves your fingers numb after every set. That means the pressure is landing in the wrong place, not that your wrist is weak.
In short
- Straps solve one problem: a grip that fails before the muscle you are training.
- Bring them in only after that repeats over two to three weeks on the same lift.
- Cotton or firm webbing lasso, long enough for two wraps, three to four centimetres wide, densely stitched.
- Hooks only when fingers or hand genuinely cannot hold, and only with a cuff covering the whole wrist.
- Keep 70 to 80 per cent of your pulling strapless and train grip twice a week.
